Bill Bailey is odds on favourite to win the 18th series of Strictly Come Dancing tonight - in an apparent head to head with HRVY.

Bookies thepools.com have made 55-year-old Bailey 8/11 to lift the Glitterball on Saturday night with dance partner Oti Mabuse, one half of last year's winning partnership with Kelvin Fletcher.

HRVY and Janette Manrara are 7/4 , Maisie Smith and Gorka Marquez are 11/2 , while Jaime Laing and partner Karen Hauer have been written off at 40/1 .

But stranger things have happened than a favourite not winning the show.

In more than half of the 17 completed series of the show the public have not voted for whoever was at the top of the leaderboard.

In 2018, for instance, Stacey Dooley and Kevin Clifton received lower scores on average than co-finalists Ashley Roberts and Faye Tozer, but sashayed away with the Glitter Ball trophy.

The previous year Alexandra Burke finished at the top of the leaderboard for the final, but the trophy ended up with Joe McFadden, who came second.

While Darren Gough, Tom Chambers and Jay McGuinness all came third but won the 2005, 2008 and 2015 competitions respectively.

Favourite Bill Bailey has yet to top the leaderboard himself, but Strictly Come Dancing is a popularity contest as much as a dance competition - and both Bailey and Oti Mabuse are enormously popular.

The winner will be decided by public vote on Saturday after each of the four remaining pairs has performed three routines, including their own favourite from the series, a spectacular Showdance and a Judges' Pick.

HRVY may be worth a punt at 7/4 . After all he is the best dancer left in the competition.

The 21-year-old has topped the leaderboard more times than anyone else - three times. And last week one of the judges, Motsi, joked that next year he might even be asked back to the show as a professional dancer such is his quality on the dance floor.

If Maise Smith triumphs it will be one of the biggest priced victories for years. Ante-post favourite she drifted once the competition started, despite topping the leaderboard in week two.

Sometimes the public just don't take to a dancer. She had to compete for survival in two dance-offs, and the judges won't be able to save her this time on Saturday.

Jamie Laing, meanwhile, has survived three dance offs to make this Saturday's final. That suggests that if he is going to be successful, it would be an enormous upset.
