Barnsley are to put up a statue for favourite son Dickie Bird - and they had better save some bronze for Simon Davey's heroes, too.

Order the sculptures now for skipper Brian Howard's sensational injury-time strike, Steve Foster's big and brave equaliser that summed up their display, and keeper Luke Steele, who had one of those days that seem scripted for FA Cup folklore.

And so many others stood up and were counted at the Kop that they all deserve to go down in posterity for one of the most famous upsets ever.

Legendary umpire Bird, chirping away in the VIP box, and their bouyant fans can rarely have had a more proud football day. This was no fluke.

Howard's winner was a wonder, cutting inside to slot a shot beyond Charles Itandje - but it came just seconds after the inspirational midfielder had been denied a stonewall penalty. The one-time England Under-20 cap cut into the box and was tripped by Sami Hyypia, but referee Martin Atkinson shamefully ignored the appeal.

Howard's reply was instant and spectacular. He took up the next attack, went at the defence and plunged a dagger into the Kop's heart.

Rafa Benitez may not recover from this blow. The fans who booed the team - and magnificently stayed to applaud Barnsley - won't take much more of this kind of humiliation.

Yet another trophy has gone in embarrassing circumstances. Defeat in the Champions League to Inter Milan would leave Benitez facing the toughest of questions about his future.

Barnsley were not just at Anfield for a day out. Hungarian striker Istvan Ferenczi could have headed the visitors in front early on from a fine cross by Martin Devaney - and Howard was close in a scramble.

To their credit the Yorkshiremen - or rather their odd blend of foreign and domestic talent - tried to enjoy the occasion, passing it around when they had the chance. Howard was neat and tidy on the ball and Anderson De Silva, once of Everton, looked the part. Diego Leon can also strut his stuff with some style.

Big centre-half Dennis Souza popped a header wide at a stage when a Barnsley goal would have been no surprise and might have lifted Liverpool out of their lethargy.

The home side started slowly, Peter Crouch heading across the face of goal and having a shot deflected wide. Barnsley's debut keeper Lee Steele had nothing to save until the 24th minute when he dealt with a Ryan Babel shot.

The slackness in the Liverpool ranks also affected Hyypia, who was hijacked by Danny Nardiello. Itandje had to make a real effort to turn away the Welshman's drive as he tried his luck from an angle.

Xabi Alonso finally shook off the cobwebs with a curler that tested Steele before Babel's skill set up the breakthrough in the 32nd minute.

The Dutchman wriggled down the left and rolled a lovely pass back for Dirk Kuyt. Even the out-of-touch striker could not miss and he gratefully stroked home his shot.

Even that was not the cue for Liverpool to make their superiority tell. The Champions League clash with Inter Milan played on a few minds as they held out of challenges.

Alonso took a horrible blow to his head from teammate Lucas Leiva and needed stitches, while Babel twisted his ankle. John Arne Riise also managed to hurt his wrist.

Apart from a Crouch header, well turned round by Steele, there was no imminent threat of a second goal that would have killed the contest. Barnsley just hung on and kept believing their moment would come, inspired by the excellent endeavours of Howard, who suggested he could play on these stages every week.

And the chance came in the 57th minute when Devaney whipped in the kind of cross that all targetmen dream of - inexplicably centre-half Foster was lurking and powered a header past Itandje.

Liverpool should have been back in front immediately. Yossi Benayoun skipped into the box but Bobby Hassell stopped his shot heroically and Rob Kozluk blocked Crouch as he went to tap in the rebound. The silence of the Kop turned into the sounds of frustration and tempers frayed on the pitch with Alonso booked and sub Marciano van Homoet joining him.

Hyypia came forward for a couple of stabs as the pressure mounted and Steele made a cracking save from Benayoun's header with the help of the bar.

The keeper was alert again when Benayoun tried to trick him at his near post, with the Israeli carrying the fight in the final stages.

Itandje also had work to do, saving from Anderson at the second attempt. He was lucky to escape when he raced out of his box to stop Kayode Odejayi - and put him off with a lunge.

And the Kop keeper was called on again to parry a thudding shot from Howard after he skipped away from Alonso.

Sub Harry Kewell clipped the bar as the tie belatedly came alive, with Steele excelling again to deny Benayoun. Steele clung on to everything in the frantic final stages before Howard turned the world on its head at the death.
