The remarkable rise of Wrexham by owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney means the Welsh team will be squaring off against Tom Brady's Birmingham City next season.
Following their impressive performance in the National League in 2022-23, the Red Dragons continued their winning streak with another unforgettable season, securing yet another promotion. Their second-place finish in League Two ensures that the Racecourse Ground will be hosting third-tier football in the upcoming campaign.
On the other hand, NFL legend Brady's first season as co-owner of Birmingham City ended in disappointment as the Blues were demoted from the Championship after a turbulent season. Head coach John Eustace was sacked while the team was in the playoff spots in October, with Wayne Rooney among those who couldn't prevent the team's descent into danger.
Ultimately, the former England and Manchester United skipper was let go, with Tony Mowbray and Gary Rowett unable to halt the downward spiral. After dropping into League One for the first time in nearly three decades, Birmingham are now set to compete in the third tier next term.
The clash between the teams of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, and NFL icon Tom Brady's Birmingham is shaping up to be a fascinating encounter. "It's Always Sunny" star McElhenney previously expressed his eagerness for the match-up, quipping: "The question is are we going to get Tom to come to us, or are we going to have to come to Tom. Maybe both! ", reports the Mirror US.
He also made a bold statement about Wrexham's ambitions, saying: "It's never been done in the history of English football when a team's gone back-to-back-to-back promotions," a comment that turned out to be quite prophetic earlier this year.
Reynolds, on the other hand, has always been open to Brady joining the fray at Birmingham, warmly stating: "I know Tom a little bit and I don't think you need to know him to know he has the spirit of a lion and a competitor in every way, shape and form. Whatever he has cooked up for Birmingham, he is going to bring it. Come on in, the water is warm! '".
A source close to Brady reportedly told the Daily Mail that Wrexham's rise was an inspiration for the former New England Patriots star's investment in Birmingham, revealing: "He has seen what Ryan Reynolds did with Wrexham and is doing with Wrexham and he wants a piece of that for himself."
"He is going to fully support [Birmingham] in his time as part owner, he is all in and will do anything to see it work out."
Tom was always destined to invest in a football club and take on an ownership role at some point. Birmingham City just happened to be in the right place at the right time for Tom to add to his portfolio of business ventures, now that he's retired and has more time to focus on such endeavours.
