Portsmouth have been promoted to the Championship after 12 years in exile, with a thrilling win over Barnsley seeing them crowned champions of League One with two games to spare.

Pompey were relegated from the second tier back in 2012 under the cloud of administration. They suffered a successive relegation down to League Two the following season as their financial issues mounted, before the Pompey Supporters Trust led a fan-funded takeover to rescue the club.

After four years in the fourth tier, Pompey were promoted as champions on the final day of the 2016/2017 season. They have reached the play-offs twice since that promotion and have now finally cracked the code to go up to the Championship.

Boss John Mousinho replaced Danny Cowley midway through last season and has tranformed the Blues into the best team in the third tier. They have lost just four games this season, winning 27, to be crowned champions with two games to go.

The crucial points to secure promotion were won on Tuesday night as they scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to beat Barnsley. The visitors went ahead just six minutes in, but Australian star Kusini Yengi quickly equalised.

John McAttee then scored just before the hour mark to put the celebrations on ice, but Colby Bishop converted a penalty with seven minutes to go to get the party back in full swing. And Fratton Park went wild when Conor Shaughnessy headed home a last-minute winner.

Eight minutes of stoppage time followed, with stewards struggling to hold back the home fans. As soon as the referee blew the final whistle they flooded on to the pitch, lifting their heroes onto their shoulders as the party finally started.

The Pompey players crowd-surfed as the party got underway

Bolton's draw at Shrewsbury ensured that Pompey cannot be overhauled in the race for top spot, with Mousinho's side having the chance to finish with 100 points if they win their final two games. Next season will be their first in the second tier since the 2011/2012 season when they were relegated.

Michael Appleton's side were under the cloud of administration for the second-half of the campaign, with a 10 point deduction ensuring they went down. Had the deduction not been applied, Pompey would have stayed up in place ironically of Barnsley. But the focus is now on Mousinho's League One winners, who will now party long into the night.

Michael Eisner bought the club from the PST upon their promotion from League Two and sent his congratulations after the final whistle. He tweeted: "Congratulations to all of Pompey! From the players to all of the staff to the fans - what an accomplishment to celebrate with the city of Portsmouth!

"Congrats to Andrew Cullen, Rich Hughes and John Mousinho for putting together a super group of footballers. That has made all the difference."
