Lee Bowyer has been handed the manager's job at Charlton on a full-time basis and he promised: “I'll do everything possible to win promotion.”

Former Leeds, Newcastle and West Ham midfielder Bowyer, 41, had been holding the fort as caretaker at the Valley for six months since Karl Robinson resigned in March.

And amid turbulence off the pitch, with fan protests against unpopular owner Roland Duchatelet including a bombardment of crisps thrown on the pitch at last month's home game with Fleetwood, Bowyer's resilience has been rewarded with a contract until the end of the season.

He won six of the last 10 games to earn the Addicks a League One play-off spot in May and Bowyer said: “I said, when I first took charge, that it was a fairytale to be back working at Charlton, the club where I started playing.

“I love this club and will give everything to get promotion. We got the players in we wanted this summer and that gives us stability.

“The fans have been outstanding, too – they have supported me from the first minute of my first game against Plymouth and we all want to do well for them.”

Director Richard Murray said: “I've been really impressed by the way Lee has taken to management and how he and Jacko (assistant Johnnie Jackson) have kept an excellent team spirit during a difficult period.

“He did really well to take us into the play-offs last season and everyone can already see his work is starting to pay off this season.”

Bowyer's first game as permanent manager will be Saturday's home game with Wycombe.
