Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan has been sentenced to a 12 month community order after 'kicking' his girlfriend on a drunken night out.
The once-capped England man has also been hit with 40 hours of unpaid community work and 15 'rehabilitation days' and after the incident in Liverpool city centre.
He escaped a jail term after admitting assaulting Rachel Wall on Duke Street in the early hours of December 22.
At an earlier hearing, the court heard how the violence involved a “kick” and took place when both Flanagan and his girlfriend were drunk on a pre-Christmas night out.
Flanagan, 25, has played 40 times for Liverpool and spent last season on loan at Burnley.
He also made his England debut when he came on for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain against Ecuador in 2014.
At today's hearing at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court Judge Wendy Lloyd said she gave the defender full credit for his early guilty plea.
She said: “You are a relatively young man with no previous convictions and it is therefore sad that you have come before the court today due to your behaviour
“This is an unpleasant episode... as we have discussed at the previous hearing this was not just a single act in that few minutes it was a matter of this lady going to the floor twice and you used your foot on her on one occasion.
“I find this was a category two offence, this lady does have injuries but of course she did not attribute those injuries to you.”
“You claim to have no memory of this incident which does suggest you were very drunk indeed.”
Judge Lloyd says she is told that the pair are still in a relationship and says she is told he does recognise “the breach of trust.”
“The report indicates you recognise the need for self management whether you have been drinking or not.”
Judge Lloyd says he will also be charged the standard £85 prosecution costs and an £85 victim surcharge.
She says compensation would be “artificial” given that the victim lives with the defendant and they are a “family unit”
CCTV footage from the night shows Flanagan walking in front of Ms Wall, who tries to go around him. He is then seen pushing Ms Wall into a wall, on two occasions.
The first occasions she stumbles and drops a handbag, before crouching to pick it up.
Flanagan again grabs her and forces her into the wall again.
The second time she falls to the floor and Flanagan swings a kick at her.
The pair then get up and walk away.
On the night a witness called Merseyside Police saying a male was attacking a female.
He saw the male throw the female into a wall and kick her when she was on the floor.
The witness thought Flanagan was trying to kiss her.
He heard the female say: “You are out of order”
The male replied: “Shut up I will f***** knock you out.”
Lionel Greig, mitigating, said the incident was short but unpleasant.
He said Flanagan was not proud of what had happened and had not enjoyed the "negative press intrusion" following it.
He said: "He deeply regrets his behaviour and there is genuine remorse."
Mr Greig said both parties were under the influence of alcohol at the time and there was no suggestion there had been any previous violence in the relationship.
He said: "They are back together and working very hard at the relationship and supporting one another."
