Stoke have opened transfer talks with West Brom for England Under-21 striker Saido Berahino.

Berahino is Mark Hughes’ top striking target as he bids to boost Stoke’s firepower and the Potters boss is making a determined effort to land him this summer after being rebuffed in January.

West Brom want between £15million and £20million for Berahino, even though he has only a year left on his Baggies contract and scored just seven goals last season.

Stoke have given Hughes their biggest-ever transfer kitty and chief executive Tony Scholes claims they are making progress in their transfer negotiations.

Stoke also want Norwich’s Nathan Redmond and Scholes said: “There’s a lot of work going on and we’re having some positive conversations at the moment. But we’re not at the point when I can say too much.

“We’ve got one or two things that are bubbling along and we’re hopeful on them.”
