With his 40s looming on the horizon, fans and critics alike are left wondering: will he be hitting the brakes anytime soon, or does a man who has achieved so much plan to keep going until the wheels fall off? So buckle up, as we delve into the fascinating life of this bona fide sporting legend ahead of his final race in Mercedes colours in Abu Dhabi.

What is Lewis Hamilton's net worth?

According to the Sunday Times Rich List, Hamilton's net worth stands at a staggering £300million. It makes him the wealthiest British sportsperson of all time, having overtaken former England footballer David Beckham in 2020.

The bulk of his fortune stems from his record-breaking racing career. In 2024 he reportedly earned a base salary of £50m per year at Mercedes, and his earnings are set to skyrocket at Ferrari next year. Back in February, Hamilton penned a multi-year deal with the Italian manufacturers, rumoured to be worth an astronomical £348m.

He’s also ventured into fashion, music, and even environmental activism. Investments in technology, real estate, and a plant-based burger chain further diversify his portfolio, solidifying his status as a multifaceted mogul.

Hamilton’s dating history is as high-profile as his F1 career. His most notable romance was with pop star Nicole Scherzinger, the former Pussycat Dolls lead singer. Their on-again, off-again relationship spanned seven years before their final split in 2015.

Following their breakup, Hamilton was linked to several prominent women, including supermodels Barbara Palvin and Winnie Harlow, as well as Rihanna, Kendall Jenner and Rita Ora, though these connections were never officially confirmed. What is Lewis Hamilton's car collection?

Unsurprisingly for a professional driver, Hamilton boasts a pretty top-notch selection of cars on his various driveways and in his various garages. But while the F1 cars he drives for a living are built for speed rather than luxury, those in his private collection are very much built for both.

Highlights include his £2.1m Mercedes-AMG Project One, a hypercar with Formula 1 technology, and the McLaren P1, a rare plug-in hybrid supercar. He also owns a custom Pagani Zonda 760 LH, a £1.6m vehicle crafted specifically for him. However, its manual transmission and loud design led Hamilton to call it more of a collectible than a practical drive.

His collection also features classics like a 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 and a 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, as well as opulent rides like a Ferrari LaFerrari (his soon-to-be employers will be delighted) and a Maybach 6. Beyond speed, Hamilton's owns a number of sustainability-focused cars including a Mercedes EQS and a modified electric Shelby Cobra, aligning with his eco-conscious views.

When you're one of the wealthiest sports stars around you're bound to own a pretty extensive array of properties. Primarily, Hamilton lives at his stunning £11.8m mansion in Monaco - just down the road from F1 rivals Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc, as it happens - but he also owns luxury properties in the UK, the US and Switzerland.

When will Lewis Hamilton retire?

Hamilton has plenty left to offer the world of racing, but at 39, the end can't be too far off. After all, he's been competing in F1 since 2007, racking up a record-breaking 104 pole positions and 103 Grand Prix wins, and a record-equalling number of world titles across stints with McLaren and Mercedes.

His contract at Ferrari will take him into his 40s, and while retirement isn't on his mind just yet, Hamilton has clearly got an eye on his next career move. Speaking to GQ Magazine, the Brit pointed to film and fashion as his primary passions beyond the cockpit, having recently set up his own production company, Dawn Apollo Films, and worked on collections with legendary designer Tommy Hilfiger.

"I’m very ambitious," he said. "But I understand that you can’t do – actually, I take that back because I don’t believe in the word can’t. To be a master at something, there’s the 10,000 hours it takes. Obviously, I’ve done that in racing. There’s not enough time to master all of these different things."

Hamilton said he was wary of both retiring too early, and failing to plan for life beyond sport. "I've spoken to so many amazing athletes, from Boris Becker to Serena Williams, even Michael Jordan," he continued.

"Talking to people that I’ve met along the way, who are retired – or some that are still in competition – and the fear of what’s next, the lack of preparation for what’s next. A lot of them said: 'I stopped too early.' Or: 'Stayed too long'. ‘When it ended, I didn’t have anything planned’. ‘My whole world came crashing down because my whole life has been about that sport'."
