Jose Mourinho was greeted by a flock of ecstatic Roma supporters on Friday as he arrived in the Italian capital to begin life as the club's new manager.

The Portuguese was sacked by Tottenham Hotspur in April but quickly found himself in a new job when Paulo Fonseca, formerly tipped to take over at Spurs, departed the Stadio Olimpico at the end of last season.

It is the first time the 58-year-old has managed in Italy since leaving Inter Milan in 2010 following a historic treble triumph, something unmatched by a Serie A side to this day.

Although Champions League and Scudetto glory seem a long way from where the Giallorossi are now - set to compete in the new Europa Conference League this upcoming campaign - their supporters seem to be excited for the future under Mourinho.

'The Special One' arrived at Roma's training complex in Trigoria and enjoyed a warm reception, seen on their Twitter page.

As manager of the three-time Serie A winners, Mourinho will reunite with players he worked with at both Manchester United and Chelsea, who helped the club to a seventh-place league finish last term and reached a Europa League semi-final.

Former Red Devils Chris Smalling and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are key players for the Giallorossi, as is ex-Chelsea winger Pedro.

It would be fair to describe the Portuguese's relationship with Mkhitaryan as fractious while the pair were at Old Trafford, despite Mourinho being the man who signed him from Borussia Dortmund upon his arrival in 2016.

However, the Armenian star recently agreed a contract extension following his new managers' appointment.

Mourinho said in a club statement upon his arrival: "After meetings with the ownership and Tiago Pinto [General Manager], I immediately understood the full extent of their ambitions for AS Roma.

"It is the same ambition and drive that has always motivated me and together we want to build a winning project over the upcoming years," the three-time Premier League champion explained.

"The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I cannot wait to start next season."

After weeks of negotiating with a number of targets, Tottenham have appointed former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Nuno Espirito Santo as Mourinho's successor.

Nuno, a disciple of the two-time Champions League-winning manager thanks to their time together at Porto, has previously cited Mourinho as a mentor.

One of the new Roma gaffers' first signings is expected to be Nuno's former Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio, as reports suggest the Portugal international is set to depart Molineux.

Patricio could also be joined by Arsenal's Granit Xhaka, who has been heavily linked with a move to the Italian capital.

Xhaka, who will sit out due to suspension when face Spain with Switzerland at Euro 2020 on Friday evening, recently dropped another transfer hint following his nation's dramatic penalty shootout victory over France on Monday.

The 28-year-old midfielder was asked to do his post-match interview in Italian, with the midfielder replying via Goal : "Not yet… it is always interesting to learn a new language.

"Let's see, everyone knows what Roma represent. Now, I am an Arsenal player, I will speak after the tournament."
