Could you answer this football question correctly?

The Chase is one of the most popular quiz shows on telly, with many of us tuning in every afternoon to watch four hopeful contestants battle it out against the Chasers for the chance to win thousands of pounds. But every now and again there's a question on the show that leaves everyone scratching their heads - including the brainy Chasers.

And in one episode of the show, a football question took many viewers by surprise, as it even seemed to stump footie-mad host Bradley Walsh. If you were on the show, would you have picked the right answer?

The question was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by a woman named Aoife after she stumbled across it while watching an episode of the ITV quiz show in 2022. Alongside a video of Bradley Walsh asking the question, she wrote: "Football fans, have you heard of this rule? This is scrambling my head."

In the clip, Bradley asked: "In football, if a direct free-kick goes straight into a team's own goal, what is awarded to the opposing team?" And the three multiple-choice options were A) Goal, B) Indirect free-kick, or C) Corner.

The contestant, named Francesca, immediately locked in her answer and seemed to leave chaser Shaun Wallace - also known as the Dark Destroyer - baffled as he struggled to pick an answer himself, declaring he "can't remember".

After Francesca confessed she doesn't watch football, Bradley said you "don't need to" because it would be a "miracle" for a player to score an own goal from a direct free-kick. However, despite the occurrence being very rare, the host was adamant that he knew the answer.

He said: "If a direct free-kick goes into its team's own goal, then it's got to be a goal because it's an own goal."

But do you agree with Bradley? What would you have answered if you were on the show?

Answer

The answer is actually a corner. Francesca guessed the answer and locked in C), which turned out to be right - leaving Bradley Walsh stumped. He said: "I'm not having that!"

According to regulation 13 of the FA's Laws of the Game states that a corner kick is the correct procedure if a team hits a direct free kick into their own goal. But fans of the show were left as baffled as Bradley, with some saying they had no idea the rule existed, and others claiming they only discovered it recently.

One person stated: "I only learnt this when I did a refereeing course in lockdown," while another added: "I don't understand why that wouldn't just be an own goal." A third also posted: "I've heard of it but thought it was a myth."

The Chase airs weekdays at 5 pm on ITV1.
