Shaun Wallace of ITV's The Chase has responded to calls for him to be "sacked" from the popular quiz show.
Speaking on ITV's This Morning, where he was interviewed alongside fellow Chaser Anne Hegerty by Josie Gibson and Dermot O'Leary, Shaun said: "Everyone has an Achilles heel, mine is soaps." He recalled a time when he was one question away from winning a Chase episode and was asked about the colour of Marge Simpson's hair.
He admitted: "I was one question away from winning a Chase episode and they asked me what colour is Marge Simpson's hair. If you've never watched The Simpsons like I've never watched The Simpsons, you're not going to know."
Anne chimed in: "That's really not a soap question, Shaun." To which Shaun replied: "Soaps, animation, whatever. Same thing to me. I got such a backlash from social media, 'You should be sacked, you're rubbish,' but questions are only easy if you know the answers."
Anne agreed, saying: "We all get those backlashes and we all just ignore them." Shaun added: "I'll always stop and take photographs or I sometimes send photos to mothers and grandmothers. Because for me I'm always grateful of the fact that the public make me famous and it's one way of saying thank you."
Shaun, the former barrister, talked about the bond in The Chase team. He shared how they hold each other in high regard, adding: "We really rate and respect each other and we really get on really well." He further stated: "The six of us are really good friends and we love and respect each other."
Elsewhere, Shaun branded an EastEnders star the "best quizzer on the circuit," during his appearance on the show. "I've been up against some really good celebrities - Jonathan Ross is one of them," Shaun admitted when asked which famous faces could match him when it comes to general knowledge.
"I'll tell you who else is good, his brother Paul - an excellent quizzer. But the best celebrity quizzer on the circuit has got to be Shaun Williams," The Chase star then revealed. "Barry from EastEnders," Anne clarified for hosts Dermot and Josie, who didn't appear to immediately recognise Shaun's name. "He takes part in a British quiz league," Shaun continued as he sang Shaun's praises on the daytime TV programme. "He's that good," The Chaser added.
