Prime Video has dropped its official first look at the second season of a gripping thriller starring Line of Duty’s Martin Compston.
Also featuring Game of Thrones’ Iain Glen and Schitt’s Creek favourite Emily Hampshire, the six-part series was the streamer’s first original show filmed entirely in Scotland.
It became one of the platform’s most popular dramas upon its release in January 2023, leaving countless fans on the edge of their seats for the follow-up.
Now, almost two years later, Prime Video has confirmed the second season of The Rig will launch in January of next year and revealed the first images of the upcoming episodes.
Glen, Hampshire and Compston are all returning, along with Rochenda Sandall and Mark Addy.
The streamer has also confirmed newcomers Alice Krige, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, Ross Anderson, Phil McKee and Johannes Roaldsen Fürst will be joining the cast.
Plus, the follow-up will undergo a major change by shifting the action to a new setting; a secret facility in the Arctic Circle.
Viewers have already been gripped by the mystery so far. One five-star review said: “This was one of the best thought out shows I’ve ever seen. The scenery was amazing and so well executed and same with the story line. Every episode you always wanted to know more which made it more gripping.
“The fact that it wasn’t too wild with the supernatural activity made it perfect and almost like it was real. To add to that the casting was amazing and they fit the roles so well I’d happily watch season 2 if there is one to come.”
Another agreed: “I loved the show and found it really gripping. Wanted to keep watching after each episode and was a bit gutted when it was over. I just really hope they make another one.”
Someone else was intrigued by the premise, writing: “The Rig was absolutely brilliant. it gets you within the first few minutes which I love because I easily get bored but this was just excellent, but it also makes you think about nature paying us back for the way we treat our planet. I'll say no more. don't want to spoil it for you. it's a full 10/10 from me.”
“Very good and edge of seat stuff,” another fan wrote. “Shame it is only one season at the moment, excited to see what happens in the next series.”
Shoppers can get 30 days' free access to binge watchable TV like The Boys by signing up with Amazon Prime. Just remember to cancel at the end and you won't be charged.
A tantalising synopsis for the next season reads: “Helicopters have taken the surviving crew of the Kinloch Bravo to a new secret offshore facility called the Stac, nestled deep in the extraordinary and deadly landscapes of the Arctic Circle.
“Here, the trapped crew must deal with the emotional and physical fallout of the devastating tsunami that destroyed the Bravo, and contend with swirling conspiracies, corporate conflicts, and new threats from the dark depths of the world’s ocean.
“The second series will continue exploring global themes - weaving together the past, present, and future of the planet while taking the viewer to spectacular environments and drawing on the frontiers of cutting edge ocean technology - including the controversial world of deep sea mining.
“David Macpherson has created a new story that delivers epic thrills and gripping action for a compelling cast of characters, both returning and new.”
The Rig is available to stream on Prime Video. Season 2 premieres January 2025.
