Santa Ana hoisted the pride flag Wednesday afternoon at City Hall, an effort to show visible support for the LGBTQ+ community.

The flag-raising coincided with Harvey Milk Day, celebrated on May 22 in recognition of the late human rights activist and one of the first openly gay elected officials as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

“The colorful rainbow flag sends a powerful message that our LGBTQ+ community members matter, they are supported and they belong in our beautiful city,” city officials said in a news release.

With a 2015 resolution requiring the rainbow-colored flag to be flown annually on Harvey Milk Day, Santa Ana was the first Orange County city to raise the pride flag. The flag will remain up through June, which is considered Pride month.

City of Irvine officials held a similar event Wednesday evening.
