The driver of a pickup truck was arrested after striking and killing a teenage pedestrian on the Balboa Peninsula on Saturday night, and alcohol may have contributed to the crash, police said.

The victim was a 14-year-old girl, Newport Beach Police Sgt. Steven Oberon said.

The collision happened around 6:45 p.m. about a block from the Balboa Fun Zone. Police shut down eastbound Balboa Street at westbound Palm Street.

Alcohol appeared to be a factor in the crash, according to a news release. The driver, Joseph Alcazar, 30, of Fontana, who remained at the scene, was arrested on suspicion of homicide and cruelty to a child, police said.

Additional details on the victim and the circumstances of the crash were not released.
