Santa Ana has hired assistant Luis Cruz as its football head coach, Saints athletic director Brian Lillie confirmed Monday.

Cruz replaces Rory Schoonmaker, who departed after one season to take the helm at El Segundo last month.

Cruz has been an assistant coach and physical education teacher at Santa Ana the past five years, Lillie said.

Last season, Cruz served as the run-game coordinator and running backs coach.

Before arriving at Santa Ana, Cruz served as an assistant Esperanza and Valencia.

He played quarterback at Valencia for legendary coach Mike Marrujo.

Santa Ana finished 7-4 overall last season and earned a share of the Orange Coast League title.

The Saints will play this fall in the new Iota League along with El Toro, Canyon, Troy, Sonora and Irvine.
