The crash occurred around 4 p.m. outside the intersection of Beach Boulevard and Orangethorpe Avenue.

A driver in a white Tesla SUV, believed to be in her 70s, was headed westbound on Orangethorpe Avenue. The Tesla at high speed entered into an eastbound lane before hitting a car exiting out of a driveway. The Tesla flew through the intersection and collided with four other cars stopped at a red light, causing it to flip, Buena Park Police Sgt. Jon Shaddow said.

Of the six vehicles involved, two motorists had to be extricated by firefighters. A total of three patients, including the Tesla SUV driver, were hospitalized, Orange County Fire Authority Battalion Chief Eric Miranda said in an interview with news video firm OnScene.TV.

Charges have not been filed against the driver of the Tesla SUV,  which was believed to have been traveling around 80 to 85 mph when the crash occurred. Why the vehicle  entered into opposing traffic was unclear and under investigation.

Drugs and alcohol are not believed to have contributed to the collision, Shaddow said.
