The 96th Academy Awards on Sunday (10 March) was an emotional evening for actress Emma Stone, who bagged the second Oscar of her career by winning Best Actress in a Leading Role at the awards show.
Winning the gong for her performance in comedy/sci-fi flick Poor Things, Emma, 35, was visibly overwhelmed as she took to the stage to accept. And while many fans were happy for her, not all agreed that it was the right decision.
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, many shared their opinion that Lily Gladstone, who was the leading actress in crime/western release Killers Of The Flower Moon, was 'robbed' of the accolade. In this awards season, Lily has won the leading actress gongs at both the Golden Globe and SAG awards for the performance.
Sharing their opinions, one viewer posted: "Emma Stone is absolutely incredible in Poor Things but Lily Gladstone's performance in Killers of the Flower Moon is forever and it always will be. #Oscars." A second added: "Don't hate that Emma Stone won. Poor Things was amazing and a career-best for her. But man, my heart goes out to Lily Gladstone. Shocked and sad. #Oscars."
"They should’ve given that to Lily and not only did she deliver an amazing performance but her winning would’ve been bigger than anything. What a damn miss. #Oscars," wrote a third. Someone else shared: "Huge huge #Oscars snub for Lily Gladstone and the entire Killers of the Flower Moon actors and production!"
Some were convinced that even Emma thought Lily was going to nab the award, with a fifth fan writing: "EMMA STONE TRULY THOUGHT LILY GLADSTONE WAS GOING TO WIN THE OSCAR OMG #Oscars."
Emma, who portrayed Bella Baxter in Poor Things, began crying as she accepted the award, thanking director Yorgos Lanthimos for casting her in the movie. Weeping, she said: "I don't know what I'm saying. The other night I was panicking, as you can see it happens a lot, that something like this could happen.
"I am so deeply honoured to share this with every cast member with every crew member who poured their love and care and their brilliance into the making of this film." After thanking her family, she saved her final thanks for "my daughter, who is going to be three in three days and who turned our whole lives technicolour".
She added: "I love you bigger than the whole sky my girl."
