More details have been leaked about the upcoming OnePlus Open 2 folding phone.
According to 9to5Google, the new phone will be based on the Find N5 from Oppo, with both companies owned by Chinese giant BBK. That device has a Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset in a chassis that is IPX8 certified, meaning it can survive submersion in up to 1m of fresh water for up to 30 minutes
This is a significant upgrade compared to its predecessor, the OnePlus Open, whose chassis was IPX4 certified and so was only verified against water splashes.
However, it’s worth noting that the ‘X’ refers to dust protection, meaning small objects and particles (such as sand at the beach) could still cause damage. But having any IP rating at all is impressive for a foldable, considering its complex moving parts.
According to the new information, the Open 2 will also have a 50Mp telephoto lens and a “drop-proof body structure”, which supposedly refers to the ruggedised hinges and design.
Previously, it was reported by 9to5Google that the Open 2 would also get an upgraded 5,700mAh battery and wireless charging for the first time. Read more in our full guide to the OnePlus Open 2.
