If you’re the boss, you might be wondering whether you should give gifts to employees around the holidays — and if so, what should you give and how much should you spend, and how will you even know what people would like?
Managers don’t need to give employees gifts purchased with their own money, but it can be a nice gesture if you want to do it — and if you target the gift to each person’s personality and preferences, it can make people feel seen and appreciated in a way that a corporate hoodie or branded tote bag can’t. (Keep in mind, though, that managers should never expect or encourage gifts from employees. Because of the power dynamics involved, gifts at work should flow down, not up.)
If you decide to buy gifts for your staff, how much to spend will vary by office. If you’re a partner at a big law firm, you’ll be spending more than a manager at a nonprofit. If you’re unsure what’s usually done in your office, check with other managers what they’re doing for their own teams.
Whatever you spend, keep it roughly equivalent for each person on your team and don’t play favorites; people will notice if one person gets a pair of Apple’s AirPod Maxes and another gets a scented candle.
So what should you actually give? Below, we’ve rounded up 42 gift ideas for every personality type on your team.
