OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 failing to cure WiFi problems for some users – support forums

Yesterday’s dot-release of OS X 10.10.1 has seemingly failed to address the WiFi problems some users have been experiencing since upgrading to Yosemite, according to continuing posts on the Apple Support Communities.

Despite the first bullet-point in the release notes for 10.10.1 reading ‘Improves WiFi reliability,’ many of those who had reported connection failures, dropped connections and slow speeds said that nothing had changed since upgrading to 10.10.1 … 

ComputerWorld quoted a number of illustrative complaints from a support thread containing more than 1,100 posts.

10.10.1 didn’t fix my Wi-Fi issues, still randomly dropping every few minutes or so […]

We’ve got business-grade routers and [access points] at my school, and we’ve got numerous people unable to connect for longer than a minute before and after [updating] to 10.10.1 […]

10.10.01 does NOT fix the Wi-Fi issues. I had to go thru the same extreme routines I have had to go thru the past 2 months to be able to connect to the Internet.

Apple has made no official statement on the problem, though several forum members report that Apple Care has advised going into System Preferences > Network > Advanced and removing old entries from the preferred network list, as well as performing an SMC reset.

Anecdotally, at least one of us here who upgraded our Retina MacBook Pros to 10.10.1 didn’t see any improvement in Wifi issues that have been an ongoing problem.

Early stats from Chitika suggested that Yosemite adoption speeds have been slightly faster than those for Mavericks.

    Have MBP Retina and I have no WiFi issues.

    • I have a rMBP, for me the 2.4 GHz channel works just fine but the 5 GHz channel is a mess, I can be standing in front of the access point and only get 500 Kbps. It doesn’t seem to disconnect like it used to but still no excuse for the low speeds.

      My iPad, iPhones and wife’s Dell all work fine on 5 GHz N and AC.

    Always with the Wi-Fi problems. Not all Wi-Fi problems are created by Apple with each new OS.

    Unless there are drastically different Wi-Fi hardware in the same model of Mac (there isn’t)…then dare I saw Wi-Fi networking, aside from basic plug-n-play side, is way out of the realm of the average user and very easy to create your own problems, and misunderstand others.

      Yeah, that explains why everything worked fine for me in Mavericks and went to hell when I updated to Yosemite Developer Preview and hasn’t gone away since.

      Always passing the blame.

    I am still having issues with Notification Center. If I select a share tab for facebook, twitter, etc., it just freezes and won’t close until I restart. Also having issues with the App Store constantly showing that Application Loader needs to be updated. Anyone else having these hiccups?

    To understand the different between any other Operating system and Apple OS or iOS is essential – before talking about a ‘bug’ or ‘bug fixes’. With Windows, Android or you name it, there is one place they create the Software and thousands of other places around the world, they create very different hardware, in totally different sizes and shapes. From the cheapest mobile phone on a tiny factory plant in the jungle – up to very sophisticated and expensive devices. They use the same software and lots and lots can happen by changing just some parts in a series and the user will experience difficulties. It has never been easy to test all this devices and all the stuff you can buy around the world when releasing a new version of their Operating system.

    With Apple it is a whole different story. They create the Hardware as well as the software, who totally match each other. The only unknown factor for Apple is the environment in which the user is using this new Computer or device and how many unknown brand routers and NAS and servers the user has installed, beside his Apple environment.

    When developing a new version of OS and it works on just one iMac, it will pretty much work on all the others around the world. This is the strength of Apple. And when installing in a clean Apple ecology system, it pretty much works as smooth as a Win-user only can dream about.
    By changing this clean concept to make OS X and iOS working perfect together, we got some trouble on our iOS devices this time after update. This creates unnecessary doubt in the community and people think the whole concept is full of ‘bugs’.
    It isn’t. Its a great concept we see coming now – implementing iWatch and iPay. It is a huge turnaround into a whole new concept and I hope will give us more freedom – not more controll from outside. I think this guys doing a real hard and honest job.

    And sometime we have doing all the individual tweaking and manipulating stuff on our Apple devices, have forgotten about it and a new version can’t understand this user tweak’s from past versions after installing.
    So there is for me as Engineer probably the most easy way to just reset to factory setup and remove the stuff from other companies. And this is normally working perfect together. Then build up peace by peace and checking what is causing the trouble… After this, is time to ask Apple whether they will check this particular combination of router X or Server Y – together with my Apple configuration, or I ask the router company to get a new driver for the new OS.

    Anyway I got our huge system to work, after finding the troublemaker in the system. It was a old XY unknown brand from a car supplier. Now Apple, Sonos, Synology is working in our Academy perfectly together. Just some of the 2th and 3th generation iPad are still stumbling. Too many mixed 1th, 2th, 3th or newer generation Apps are installed and for some of them, no upgrade is available anymore. Short of memory and too slow for 2014…
    Just declare Yosemite as the guilty part shows, how little basic knowledge there is sometimes and how much we need 9TO5MAC and other relevant sites to explain what actually happen.

      There are so many logical flaws in your Apple advertisement that it’s hard to reply. Wifi is a standard. Period. It’s not a magical combination of brand X and server Y as you write, it’s a fairly documented technology that should work perfectly with any iDevice. Also, what the hell do you mean by “tweaking and manipulating” our devices? And “stuff from other companies”? You mean installing applications on my iPhone (pretty much the only “tweaking” we are allowed to do) will cause it to drop the connection? Also you claim to be an engineer, but write about “asking router company to write a new driver for the new OS”. Since when did routers have drivers? Since when did routers have anything to do with the OS your connecting device has?

        WiFi is a standard, yes. However, there are different routers out there. How they nice they play with your operating system, security measures taken, firewalls, ac, b, c technology. 5 or 2,4ghz.. all matters on how well they work. In this case however, it seems people have not changed their hardware or routers lately.. this leads to believe that OSX Yosemite might be the cause of it.

        Why this happens is not certain, it could be a bug in the system, some new security measures screwing things up.. or that it no longer plays well with an old outdated router.. what might be the solution is to update the routers firmware, as well as the Mac’s. Not just one of them.

        You see a Apple environment backwards like every Microsoft or Android supporter does. This is why you think WiFi as a standart and Apple has just to follow this standart. The whole Apple environment has to work together, not just a outside standart.
        ‘Master Your Mac’ is a thick book with tips how to tweak, customize and secure a OS X. And there are lots of this kind of books and youtube-stuff out there people are using. You know little about this I guess.
        Anyway, you can do lots of tweaking also with Mac, writing scripts lots of other stuff working only with Mavericks and when updating, people getting trouble. I have seen this a thousand times. You shout come out with me and see what happen around and what the underlaying problem often is.
        No, I definitely do not work for any Apple connected company and not interested in any advertisement but can have a different perspective then you have. Why does it work perfect for most of people and some are complaining? I have fixed hundreds of Apple systems the last month. Some of them having just port problems or by removing old scripts or other tiny problems. Nothing to do with Apple. It is often corrected in less then an hour.
        Router with old Firmware – not driver – thanks for correction.
        And yes I’m a IT Engineer for centuries and do so much other stuff then IT today. I just like to open the possibility to check some of your other stuff, before blaming Apple OS.

      Ok, but my router is an Apple Time Capsule 3TB… and a rMBP, and MB both with Yosemite 10.10.1 are 2 piece of shits after upgrade. But my other iDeveces (Macmini – with Maverick, iPads, iPhones (4 – 2x4S – 5S), Apple TV and not iDevices like Epson Printer, Tvs are working well…
      That is why I say the guilty is Yosemite!

      I have owned a Computer Repair Company for 8 years now and I am in charge of setting up networks across collage campuses 1000+ connections. Trust me when I say the problem is not user based. I have one mac mini 2010 device the wifi is shitty at best. The only way I was able to “fix” this was set up a router as a repeating bridge and connect via cat 5. Don’t know if it has to do with the medal casing, OS or wifi card it self but there is a problem and passing the buck to the user is not the solution.

    As my masses of screen shots and video recordings can testify to, I have had WiFi problems with Apple gear since I first acquired a PowerBook in the 1990s. And it only got worse once Apple introduced metal cased machinery. It cannot be me or my routers, because it’s a constant problem. I believe this is for two reasons, Apple have been sourcing flaws WiFi/radio chips and the metal casing interferes with the wireless signals.

    My Lenovo plastic (but very nicely made) laptops have no such issues, nor does my plastic Android phone.

    Me thinks no amount of software or firmware fixes will ever solve this problem.

      If everybody had this problem, I would agree about: plastic is fantastic. There are millions of people around the globe not having this kind of experience at all. We love Apple laptop and iMac because Apple is using metal casing, not cheap plastic.
      As Engineer and Trainer I was and still are around the world on Universities and did see all the ups and downs in the computer industry, for 42 years now.
      When being outside on a University campus in Europe, Asia, Australia, California or wherever, students are sitting in the park, using their Apple Laptop, sometimes far away from the buildings and nobody ever did complain about, their device will not work. I was helping sometimes 20 students on a single tour
      with their Dell or other Microsoft based machines, connecting to University Wifi with their Laptop.
      This is actually, what it makes me shift to Apple products myself, some years ago. When Apple did developing the Mac philosophy with NeXT technology, it gets unbeatable. Before this, the PowerBook in the 90s are really not comparable with last 5 years Apple technology.

      So just use your Windows and continue telling us about, how huge a Wifi problems Apple has. Not many will belief you anyway. Apple did not expand to annual revenue in 2014 totaled $182 billion by producing Laptop or iPhone with sourcing flaws Wifi/radio chips or the metal case interferes with the wireless signals. Apple sold lately 10 million devices in just one weekend, without anybody was complaining about WiFi.
      But I guess Apple has a special camera, detecting you and selling you only devices with lots of flaws and failures – since the 90s…! What a huge conspiracy…! I have to admit, this is not a positive strategy of Apple. Just keep your video recordings. Perhaps you can make some money with a video exhibition.
      Samsung, Google and Microsoft will sponsor you gladly.

      You are so lucky to have your Lenovo and Android phone – so Apple can’t bother you anymore ;-)

    I started having issues when I moved up to Yosemite Developer Preview from Mavericks.

      I had the same sort of problem, since Yosemite Beta.
      I will say it works perfectly when I use Parallel’s 10 on my MacBook Air running Yosemite.
      How is it possible the Windows part of my Mac works better for networking than the Mac networking under Yosemite. Any suggestions are appreciated.

        By the way, when I want back to Mavericks from Yosemite Beta, the network operated perfectly. I’m now on 10.10.1, and network is inconsistent/flaky, except when I run IE under Parallel’s 10. Hard to believe, but true.

    The new up-date did not fix my wifi issues on my new Mac Mini. It came with the latest version of Mavericks and wifi was working perfectly, and it was fast. The trouble started as soon as I up-graded the OS to Yosemite. Strangely my much older MacBook Pro, and my iMac 27″ were both running the latest beta version of Yosemite and they have no issues with wifi. So either the wifi issue is machine specific or something was changed between the beta and final release of Yosemite. I’ve tried all the recommended fixes on the Mac Mini, but no success yet. I guess I’ll wait until OS X 10.10.2 is released grrrr…

    Some of these people may have actual hardware issues or they need to reset there network settings. See all those network connections in that list? That could be part of the problem. You need to delete all of that out. Then reset locations by adding a new location. You don’t even have to name it and leave it as untitled. Then hit apply at the lower right corner for it to take affect. Now setup your connection to your WIFI. Reset PRAM by powering on your computer and holding down the P,R, Option, Command keys all at the same time. Reset SMC or power management on a portable by pressing the power, option,shift,command keys all at the same time for a few seconds. You should see the MagSafe LED change colors after you let go. Then power on as normal. Another step would be to reset your router to make sure that is not the problem. Most routers you just need to unplug them for 10 minutes then plug them back in. Otherwise set your self up with a Genius Bar appointment and they can check your hardware out. If nothing else verify your hardware is good. No Apple store near you then call Applecare to get the help you might need.

    Some web pages have elements or corrupted video, usually in flashing blocks, I cannot see anyone else bleating about it on the net yet however, Mavericks was fine, but this park in california is a little annoying, beautful to look at though!

    I’ve never had Wi-Fi problems on my MacBook Pro Retina. Maybe its because it is a mid-2014 model, and it was shipped with OS X 10.9 Mavericks

    My mid 2010 iMac was working perfectly with Mavericks prior to my upgrade to Yosemite 10.10. Now it shows “no wifi hardware installed” and none of the supposed fixes have had any effect, and even a call to Apple Support resulted in nothing helpful, and I was told it was a hardware issue that “coincidently” occurred at the same time as the Yosemite update. Granted, Apple would let us all go down in flames before they ever admitted any responsibility.

    I have a MB Pro (7,1) and finally the battery says that works OK.
    All beta version, with the exception of beta 3 gave a “Service Battery” Message.

    So, one problem solved for me :)

    I totally regret that I’ve made the mistake to update. Now my Mac works quite slow, and Sleep mode doesn’t work anymore! I’m so pissed off!
    It’s not the first time Apple screws things up with their updates!
    Seems like their quality sucks lately.

      So what about the huge battery drain still remain unsolved? I am really frustrated with the battery drain issue since upgrading to Yosemite. I had like 7-8 hours of battery life, and upon upgrading to Yosemite, it is not more than 5 -5:30 hours. There are myriads of complaints regarding the drain issue on the forums, and I really thought that with the 10.10.1 upgrade Apple would give us a fix about the drain but the problem is still the same. I don’t know what Apple is doing about the problem, but it is really annoying. I think that posting on forums about the issue is no longer effective, maybe you can spread the word on websites like 9to5mac, so that we can get our fix soon. I would be glad if anyone experiencing the same problem mentions me with his/her experience about the battery drain.

      P.S. About two weeks ago, I went to a Apple reseller to check if a same model of my MBP (mine is a mid-2012 MBP non-retina) has the same battery drain. It was about 4;45 with a 100% battery. It is a pity that they are selling these products in that condition.

    I have been disconnected from my wifi 23 times in 24 hours. This is ridiculous. Apple needs to get their stuff together. I pay 3000.00 for a computer who’s system software does this?

    Running 10.10.1 on late 2013 iMac, and it hangs on every shutdown and I must force shutdown every time or just let it sleep…which is what I do. Any fix?

    What the heck? I get Wifi: No hardware installed on my Mac Pro Quad core. Anybody ever heard of a fix for this? unbelievable. I’m running Yosemite 10.10.1 aka “the cure”.. I get so tired of the serivce with Apple anymore… I spent 4 hrs waiting at the “genius bar” in Orlando. got my laptop back and it still wasn’t fixed. I’m an hour and a half from there – so far – I’ve spent about 16 hrs in emails calls trip and waiting in frkn line. They also emailed someone else’s product issue to me. that same day.

    my only prob when update to 10.10.1 is battery reducing so fast, like 1/4 of the battery was killed.
    im using mbp mgx70 new, battey is just so good in even in 10.10 until updated to 10.10.1

    I have been struggling with this dog-turd 10.10.1 for several hours trying to get the wifi to work. It now does, but I may just vent a little by saying that I have had a guts full of Apple putting out overpriced substandard crap like this. I was totally Mac everything for many years but recently both Apple’s politics and their nagging legacy and continuation of arrogance has really pushed me outside of the reality distortion field. This is a com pay with billions in the bank yet they a so pathetic that they cannot test their software prior to release. Sure it is hard to find and eradicate all bugs but the number of people having wifi problems is Yosemite is disgraceful and speaks of Apple’s incompetence.

    For all the other poor suckers out there who have also wasted considerable time (which I’m sure Apple won’t pay recompense but would be happy to charge you $$$ to have their agents try to fix it) I will tell you what I did.

    First, I went to my wifi and under Network…Advanced and renewed the DHCP, only to find that it was providing an address outside of my network range. So I set the IP4 setting to manual and entered a valid IP address (192.168.1.123 in my case) with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and router 192.168.1.1, okayed that then Apply, and now the wifi is working again.

    Damn you Apple. The above and so many other annoyances in recent times are driving me back toward Microsoft. Windows 10 is becoming more appetizing by the day.

    We found seemingly incurable problems getting our upstairs Mac Mini to keep the Wifi signal sent by the downstairs router. After a month of daily hassle the problem was resolved: We found that attaching a USB extender ALWAYS cut the Wifi signal, and removing the USB extender ALWAYS allowed the Wifi connection to be reestablished right away, automatically. At fault was not any particular USB port: Using ANY port immediately cut the signal.

  32. I changed my Mac pro iMac and I have the same problem, cost me &2100. I thought my Mac pro had problem, bought new router,and tried to fix my Mac pro and now is gone. I Mack has always the same router and does the same. All waste of money.

    My iMac wifi is a bust. But I can get it to work with my iPhone hot spot. odd. I have had many problems with this iMac (mother board switched out on warranty last month) continuing issues with freezing. Apple geniuses (lol) have been useless. I’ve been using these systems for twenty years and have never seen such a terrible product. I had a mac mini that had to have two different trips to the apple geniuses only to never work and I actually got a refund. Now another iMac I have has these issues. I work at home half time doing video and this is costing me money and time.
    Recently updated to Yosemite. Did not have the wifi issues before the yosemite update. But the wifi worked for a few weeks with yosemite so not sure if it’s hard ware or the update. Other things to note: another iMac in basement working fine with yosemite and wifi.
    modem checked, comcast called, all tests done under the sun. off I go to hell -apple bar with my applecare criminal plan. Wasting my money and time, and this system is still under warranty. tired. 4th trip and I’m not happy.
