Voice computing is still in its early days, for one reason because voice assistants often aren’t great at understanding our words unless they fit a pre-defined model.

Siri with Apple Intelligence will hopefully be a lot smarter about this, but in case not there’s another iOS 18 feature that should do the trick: Vocal Shortcuts.

One of the few iPad-centric features highlighted at WWDC was a redesigned tab bar for apps. iPad apps have historically used a similar tab bar to what’s found on the iPhone, with different tabs accessible from the bottom of the screen.

iPadOS 18 changes that with a new tab bar UI that floats at the top of the screen.

The new tab bar also comes with a secret weapon: you can customize it to add the menu options you care about most.

iPad power users have had a disappointing WWDC. Despite the advanced M4 iPad Pro sparking hopes of a big software upgrade to come, 2024 isn’t the year for it.
