Format external drives on an iPad | Screengrab

Digital artist and developer Kabel Cadle has spotted a handy new feature in iPadOS 18. For the first time, you can format external drives on an iPad, choosing between three different format options. Update: The same option is also available on the iPhone in iOS 18.

iOS 18 can perform actions based on any voice command you set, even when your iPhone’s locked

Vocal Shortcuts in iOS 18

Voice computing is still in its early days, for one reason because voice assistants often aren’t great at understanding our words unless they fit a pre-defined model.

Siri with Apple Intelligence will hopefully be a lot smarter about this, but in case not there’s another iOS 18 feature that should do the trick: Vocal Shortcuts.

iPadOS 18’s new tab bar for apps is more powerful than it first appears

iPadOS 18 customizable tab bar

One of the few iPad-centric features highlighted at WWDC was a redesigned tab bar for apps. iPad apps have historically used a similar tab bar to what’s found on the iPhone, with different tabs accessible from the bottom of the screen.

But there’s one more feature, coming to the Files app, that solves a huge pain point on the iPad: the ability to keep folders and files permanently downloaded.

Apple AI features | Existing iPad Pro boxes shown

It’s clear that we’re going to see some exciting new Apple AI features this year, and the usual way for the company to announce major new iOS features would be to preview them at WWDC, and then launch them in September with the new iPhone line-up.

But there could be a couple of reasons to hope for some kind of preview of these new features on the new iPad Pro during the May 7 Let Loose Apple event
