Over the last 12-18 months, popular lock manufacturers like Schlage and Kwikset have introduced iOS and Android-connected deadbolts for your home. Results have been somewhat mixed but there has clearly been an interest amongst consumers for this type of technology. This week, Brinks announced a new competitor in this space that blends familiar features with some new ideas.
The Array Digital Deadbolt has all the typical app-connected qualities. But instead of using low-power connection options like ZigBee or Bluetooth, Brinks is relying on Wi-Fi to communicate between devices. Because of the increased power drain, a solar panel has been built-in to the lock to help keep things running. More details below.
Brink’s Home Security Array digital deadbolt has a fairly standard design. You’ll find the locking mechanism on the lower half with a keyboard and solar panel above. As we mentioned, Brink’s dependance on Wi-Fi connectivity comes at the cost of battery drain. On the flip side, using this communication medium opens the door to more possibilities.
It’s unclear at this time how dependable the solar panel will be and if it will function well in low-light situations. The inclusion of solar makes this a notable release and eases the worry of having to replace batteries regularly to ensure continuous functionality. Brinks expects the battery to last “for a few years” and it is user-replaceable if needed.
At launch, the Array deadbolt will be a standalone product. Brinks plans to introduce Apple HomeKit and Nest integration at some point following its release in late 2016. Much like Schlage and Kwikset’s deadbolts, users will be able to lock and unlock with a compatible device while also creating unique key codes for out of town visitors or handymen. Brinks states that installation only requires a screwdriver to get things up and running.

By including a highly efficient, proprietary power system, Array allows consumers to use their existing Wi-Fi routers to connect the deadbolt to the cloud, providing a “security simplified” solution for homeowners looking to upgrade from traditional deadbolts. To power the deadbolt’s Wi-Fi connection, Array uses an innovative power management system that combines a proprietary battery PLUS an onboard photovoltaic panel that captures light energy from a variety of indoor and outdoor sources – even in dim light – to sustain the lock’s functions.

Array’s breakthrough power management system eliminates the need for frequent battery changes. The proprietary, onboard photovoltaic panel, powered by SunCore, provides an energy yield nearly twice that of standard solar panels and is capable of extracting useful energy even in low levels of ambient light.
“Hampton’s integrated solar power management and battery system enables integration of Wi-Fi, the default home network technology available in 86% of U.S. households,” said Tom Kerber, director of research at Parks Associates. “Technologies that extend battery life or eliminate the need to replace batteries altogether provide significant differentiation in the smart home market.”
The Array smartphone app will allow the user to operate the deadbolt with both iOS and Android devices. Using cloud connectivity and point-to-point connections between the cloud, mobile app, and deadbolt, consumers can open their doors with a smartphone instead of using keys; provide access remotely to guests using E-Keys and E-Codes; check to confirm whether the door is closed and locked; and use the app to view door lock usage, and schedule or manage user access.
Array digital deadbolts will employ a highly secure cloud architecture and two-factor authentication to ensure users maintain full control over access to their home. All data transmitted between the deadbolt, app, and cloud will be protected by state-of-the-art encryption protocols. Array digital deadbolts will also be compatible with Apple HomeKit, Works with Nest products, and various Smart Home platforms.
Array digital deadbolts feature durable construction, meet or exceed American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Grade 2 standards – the highest performance rating for residential door hardware – and are pick-resistant, bump-resistant, and drill-resistant.
