Food, beverages, and cosmetic industries must use food-grade lubricants for machinery because some parts of the lubricants may be exposed to the products in production. The authorities strictly instructed plant operators and quality supervisors to use NSF-certified lubricants based on the type of food contact. The regulatory board specifies various classifications of lubricants.   A wide range of lubricating oils, greases, and sprays are tailored to produce foods, beverages, animal feedstuffs, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Different types of certificates are issued based on the food contact type, such as NSF H1, H2, H3, 3Hand, Halal, ISO, etc.   Food-grade greases for roller bearings, high-temperature grease for the furnace area, and food-grade gear oils are needed for compressors and Hydraulic systems.   Food-grade oils are produced with approved and certified raw materials, so they are costlier than conventional lubricants. Production units don’t seriously consider health hazards and use normal multipurpose greases to cut costs to fill their pockets, which is seriously harmful to the consumer.   For audit purposes, they arrange the Halal certificates and NSF certificates from external sources.   Yesterday, I received a call from a reputed company asking for the certificate. I checked the records and couldn’t find the purchase invoice. After a detailed discussion, we identified the non-food-grade grease in the machine; the plant operator said they are using normal multi-purpose grease and that the certificate is required only for audit purposes.   The said brand sells and advertises the adverse effects of normal products, and only health-conscious customers buy them.   Where should we start the awareness campaign? Don’t you think the management has any role in ensuring such things?   An awareness campaign for food-grade lubricants is critical.
