    International Environmental and Social Advisory Services - Sustainable Finance

    Our Arup Independent Environmental and Social Consultant (IESC) Team have just completed our 16th E&S Monitoring Visit to the Dar es Salaam to Makutupora Standard Gauge Railway Project. It was a special one for me personally - after working on this project for over half a decade I was finally able to ride the train between Dar and Dodoma. What a ride it was, skimming through the Tanzanian countryside in the country’s first fully electric high speed train! What has been achieved here by all parties, notably TRC and Yapi Merkezi, is nothing short of remarkable. Has it been challenging? Incredibly. Have there been bumps in the road? Absolutely. Nevertheless, the progress and efforts made over the years to align the project with the international standards has been impressive to witness. We are proud to have contributed to the success of this game changing project. Hopefully the work will help to secure a legacy for sustainable railway development in Tanzania for future generations to come.     We are excited to announce changes to our board structure, effective April 2025. Jerome Frost, current Arup Group Chair will take on the newly created role of CEO, leading Arup into its next chapter.  Hilde Tonne, former CEO of Norway’s Statnett SF, will step into the role of Non-Executive Chair of the new Arup Group Limited Board. Hilde brings extensive expertise from her leadership roles at Statnett SF, Telenor Group and Ramboll Group, alongside her service as a Non-Executive Director on Arup’s Group Board since 2023. Mahadev Raman will continue as Chair of Trustees, maintaining the trustees’ role of safeguarding the firm’s independence, long-term success, and unique culture on behalf of Arup’s members. As a trust-owned firm with over 18,000 members in 140 countries, Arup thrives on its independence, enabling us to achieve ambitious outcomes for our clients, communities, and the planet. This evolution in governance reflects our continued growth and the demand for our services, helping us respond more swiftly to market opportunities.     How can residents of the Rasulabad informal settlement in Surat, India, make their homes more resilient to withstand the heat of summer and the monsoon rains? Through our partnership with Roof Over Our Heads (ROOH), we worked with Rasulabad residents to design and create a new roof structure using readily available, low-cost materials. Together, we developed practical ideas and designs that had to be: · Affordable · Adaptable · Accessible · Available · Acceptable The result? A blueprint for practical, low-carbon, and safe homes for Rasulabad, co-created by the residents themselves.     Climate change is reshaping our world, bringing new threats to health, safety and wellbeing. From heat stress to novel diseases, and aging infrastructure, the risks are evolving. But with diverse thinking and systemic approaches, we can turn these challenges into opportunities for innovation and resilience. We brought together experts, practitioners, policymakers and academics at a Safety Summit to explore these issues head-on.     It feels like we are seeing the impacts of climate change in our #cities almost daily, with increasingly frequent experiences of overheating, flooding, and storms. The result is disruption and loss of productivity and, too often, loss of life, livelihoods, and property. But climate change is not the only pressure cities face, and strengthening urban resilience needs to be combined with decarbonisation, nature-positive regeneration, and reducing poverty.   Working collaboratively is the foundation for building true resilience, and Arup welcomes and supports the COP29 Declaration on Multisectoral Action Pathways (MAP) for Resilient and Healthy Cities being launched on @COP29 Azerbaijan Cities Day.   Having guided cities to holistically plan and deliver urban resilience for over a decade we recently launched an updated City Resilience Framework ’24.     We must not underestimate the impacts of extreme heat – on our health and our economic security. 3.8 billion people are expected to face extreme heat in the decades to come, with the most significant overheating forecast for areas of South Asia, East Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.   As Sameh Wahba from the The World Bank articulated so powerfully at our Keeping Communities Cool: Effective Interventions for Neighbourhoods and Buildings event at COP29 Azerbaijan, extreme heat that exceeds physiological limits will undermine some nations’ economic strength by constraining GDP by 1.4-1.7%.   There are ways to reduce urban heat island effects. The most effective response to urban overheating is to identify areas and communities most vulnerable to extreme heat and to develop plans that combine building design – including retrofitting to reduce overheating – with nature-based urban planning that cool at a neighbourhood scale.   The time to act on urban overheating is now and we thank Sameh Naguib Wahba for opening our Keeping Communities Cool event.   #ActOnCooling #ClimateActionEveryDay Jo da Silva DBE Peter Vangsbo Mirey Atallah Yasemin Somuncu Farrukh Shad Weijie Zhang
