𝗧𝗵𝗲 '𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿' 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗽 – "𝙄 𝙒𝙖𝙨 𝙒𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙐𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙡 𝙄 𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙯𝙚𝙙 𝙄 𝙒𝙖𝙨 𝙎𝙩𝙪𝙘𝙠" I’ve seen this pattern again and again—among my peers, my coaching clients, and even in my own career. In consulting, especially at top firms like MBB, being an insecure overachiever isn't just common; it’s often rewarded. This relentless drive catapults you to early success, but it’s a double-edged sword that can leave you stuck later on. The culture feeds on your insecurities: * Insane hours and total dedication aren’t just encouraged—they’re expected. * High-stakes projects keep you chasing perfection at the cost of everything else. * Constant feedback loops make external validation feel like your lifeline. I get it. I lived it. And for a while, it worked. But here’s the hard truth: as you move up to Manager or Partner, this fear-fueled approach becomes a liability. The very habits that made you successful can start to hold you back. You must break free and find confidence without fear as your constant companion. If you don’t, brace yourself for: * Burnout from the never-ending pressure. * Stagnation because you’re afraid to delegate or take real risks. * Dysfunctional teams as micromanagement kills trust and creativity. I’ve coached multiple consultants through this transition—from FEAR to FREEDOM—and it takes deliberate effort. Here’s what works: * Developing self-awareness to recognize fear-driven actions before they consume you. * Prioritizing delegation to empower your team (because control is an illusion anyway). * Redefining failure as a learning curve, not a career-ending disaster.
