Construction update: first power was generated from our wind farm in Madagascar this week! This turbine is the first of 19 that will ultimately provide 16 MW of wind energy to Rio Tinto's QMM mineral sands mine, complementing our operating solar PV system. A huge thank you to Ferris Engineering, Flexwind, Harmattan Renewables, BRS Africa, G_Hub Solutions, Proconics, Vestas, and DHYBRID Power Systems GmbH for their crucial role in making this project happen. The wind farm will be the first in the country, demonstrating how renewables can provide reliable power for mining operations in Madagascar and across the continent. ⚡ 🌿 🏭

Last week, Lesley Reddy, CFA and Modi Kutua represented CrossBoundary Advisory at Investing in African Mining Indaba— where it was clear Africa is stepping up its role at the global negotiating table, seeking partnerships that drive mutual growth. From our discussions with public and private stakeholders across the mining value chain, these key themes stood out: 🔹 Bridging the funding gap for mining – African governments and DFIs are stepping up, but international partners who can finance exploration and feasibility stand to gain long-term value. 🔹 The rise of private equity – Private equity is growing in importance, yet local funds must navigate market absorption challenges in a tough fundraising environment. 🔹 Alternative financing instruments – Prepayments, streaming, and royalties offer untapped potential, but better connectivity between capital providers and seekers is needed. 🔹 Increased blended finance – Political risk insurance and export credit facilities are gaining traction, with increased appetite from global providers. 🔹 Inter-African cooperation – Regional collaboration and shared infrastructure development can drive beneficiation, but energy security and expertise gaps remain a challenge to move up the value chain. 🔹 Innovative approaches to social license – Larger miners are enhancing their social license to operate by supporting local suppliers and communities through access-to-finance initiatives. Over the past decade, we have connected private capital to underserved markets, mobilizing billions of dollars in closed investments. We have over 100 investment professionals based across 10 markets in Africa with expertise in structuring blended finance transactions, advising on early-stage deals, and developing innovative funding vehicles to address access to finance gaps. Meet Engr. Umar Josiah Danbaba MBA, Project Development and Operations Lead at CrossBoundary Access. Umar oversees energy access project implementation, ensuring optimal execution and alignment with our mission to deliver sustainable energy access investments. Recently, Umar visited sites in Nigeria 🇳🇬 to conduct technical inspections of our projects. We asked him what makes a project truly successful in the communities we serve: "A project is only successful when the community fully embraces it. People don't just want electricity—they want it to solve real problems like business growth, better healthcare, and education. What works in one village may not work in another, which means success requires adjusting our business models, pricing, and service delivery based on each community's specific needs. The most sustainable projects are those that empower locals to manage and maintain the mini-grids themselves, ensuring long-term impact and reliability." Along with an esteemed panel that included Billy Mawasha, CEO of Kolobe Nala Investments, Mwelwa Manda, Country Manager at Prospect Resources Limited, Erez Ichilov, Founder of Cedrus Arbor LLC, and HELEN AIGBE BRUME, ACCA Director & Global Head for Project and Asset Based Finance at African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), the panel discussed the central question: how can Africa capitalize on the demand for critical minerals while protecting its environmental and social communities? 🪨☀️ Critical minerals are essential for the energy transition. They are key components in technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, support renewable energy systems, and promote a sustainable and resilient energy future.   🌍💰Africa plays a pivotal role in the global energy transition due to its vast reserves of critical minerals and metals essential for renewable energy technologies. However, the continent faces challenges that slow down economic progress.   ⛏️🍃The mining sector must decarbonize before helping the world decarbonize. Mining with renewable energy sources can provide a blueprint for other sectors, and popularizing renewable energy will increase demand for critical minerals, boosting mining revenues.
