Convincingly aligning business strategies with profit generation is a challenge. Leaders want clarity, but if marketers understand the nuances of conversion, we also recognize the importance of context and domain expertise. Feeling overwhelmed and unsure how to approach this? Here's the framework we use to clarify objectives and metrics that matter: 1. Define the primary goal Businesses exist to make money. Focus on the conversion process: turning non-paying customers into paying ones. To effectively illustrate this, follow a straightforward three-step approach: 1. Identify your target audience and their journey 2. Analyze existing conversion metrics within your industry 3. Determine what unique factors influence your conversion rates 2. Emphasize the importance of context Metrics should be meaningful and context-specific. Don't just follow the crowd. Ask yourself: - Is conversion rate the best metric for our business? - Should we consider retention rate instead? 3. Question industry standards Just because a metric is an industry standard doesn’t mean it’s right for your business. To challenge the status quo: 1. Gather data on alternative KPIs relevant to your model 2. Analyze how these KPIs tell a different story 3. Use this information to advocate for a tailored approach We applied this thinking when assessing our key performance indicators. For example, companies that prioritize customer retention often see more sustainable growth than those focused solely on acquisition. 4. Propose a tailored strategy Don’t rush into implementing broad changes. Instead, suggest a strategy that aligns with your specific business model. To get leadership on board, highlight the significance of choosing the right metrics: 1. Agree on KPIs that reflect your unique business needs 2. Balance those KPIs with data-driven insights For example: ✅ Focus on retention rates that indicate long-term loyalty ✅ Analyze customer lifetime value to prioritize investments ✅ Adjust strategies based on market dynamics and customer feedback Even the most skeptical executive will see the value in a thoughtful, context-driven approach. Not a strategy. The most effective way to leverage a CDP is to: - categorize your data into behavioral and attribute data - tag your website and apps to capture user interactions - ensure data is in a usable format for your CDP - build comprehensive customer profiles that include income, social networks, and family status - understand how behaviors and attributes shape customer profiles - clean and prepare data for analysis - use insights to inform your marketing strategies - continuously monitor and refine your data collection processes - leverage both qualitative and quantitative data for deeper insights - experiment with different approaches to enhance customer engagement Get the strategy right.
