Rick Steves is an American travel writer, publicist, TV personality, and author of numerous travel guides, containing walking tours and geographic information. Steves has trained and worked with hundreds of tour guides and received feedback from thousands of travelers. Today we decided to share several key points from Rick Steves' TEDxSeattleSalon talk on what makes a great tour guide and host: Passion: A guide should be in love with traveling, strive to learn something new and, of course, enthusiastically transfer his knowledge to others. Empathy: Good guides have the ability to connect with people from different walks of life and cultures on a human level. They also allow the audience to draw their own conclusions. Meaningfulness: Focus on creating meaningful experiences for travelers, going beyond typical tourist attractions to promote mutual understanding and networking. Humanity: It is invaluable when a guide can anticipate what might cause stress to his guests and prevent it. Humor: Good guides use humor and storytelling to engage the audience and make information more memorable and relevant. Language and communication skills: It is extremely important to be able to communicate clearly and confidently with people, as well as to speak foreign languages at a sufficient level. Learnability: Great guides are humble and accessible, willing to admit that they don't have all the answers, and open to learning lessons from their interactions with travelers. These points highlight how a great tour guide goes beyond simply leading tours to becoming a catalyst for cultural exchange and enrichment.

Last week we talked about how to become a guide: what steps to take first and what to focus on. Now let's talk about your uniqueness, which can attract travelers' attention while you take your first steps as a tour guide. Stay flexible At the very beginning, try not to get not dwell on one specific travel program. Rely on your interests and knowledge, but try to understand what your potential clients need. Show up Don't wait for others to recognize you and your strengths. Instead, formulate your proposal and demonstrate your best skills. Be an author An individual approach is one of the most valuable things in the tourism market in 2024. People don't buy tours, they buy emotions and memories. So, try to help them feel the authenticity of your city: show them the places you like, or create an excursion program based on a specific story. Become an author! What do you think of these tips? Do you have any ideas on how to become recognizable?

Being a tour guide is very interesting because you always learn, solve new tasks, meet people, and develop professionally and personally. But where do you start if you don't have the necessary competencies or experience yet? Investigate the tourism industry in your country. What part of the economy does the tourism industry occupy? What training programs can you complete to get a certificate? Determine, specify, clarify. There are many types of tourism: try to be specific and decide whether you want to entertain tourists with sporting events, unusual experiences or cultural events. Try to create your future professional portrait, and then become that professional. Find examples. Look for people who have already achieved what you want and try to learn from them. Join the community to receive advice, and do not hesitate to ask for help from those who have more knowledge. Start to take steps. When you see the big picture and you have a goal, start working on it. Start a training program and look for clients: online services like the Find Guide app can help! Good luck! #localguide #tourguide #tourism #travel #personalguide #individualtour #individualtrip

2024 has just begun: this is a great time to set new goals! So... how can a tour guide attract more customers in 2024? Improve a personal brand Why? In the Internet age, self-presentation is crucially important. Your presence on social networks can help you increase the number of customers and effectively promote your services. How? Start a blog on Instagram or YouTube, and create your own personal website or an account in the FindGuide app (here you can write about yourself and your experiences, upload photos, and chat with travelers). Take trends into account Why? The tourism industry is being influenced by economic, political, and social changes. When you know the trends, you can better understand customer needs and become more competitive. How? Pay attention to what people prefer when they travel. Get acquainted with statistics and read travel resources. For example, you can find a lot of information in the FindGuide blog. Make sure to check it out! Join community Why? You can always learn something from your colleagues, and get help or useful advice. Sharing experiences is very important in any industry, including tourism. How? Search for groups on various social networks: for example, on Linkedin and Facebook. If possible, participate in festivals and conferences and try to expand your professional network. #happynewyear #personalbrand #travel #tourism
