It was a pleasure hosting these two young people - Giorgia Signora from Italy and Karen Julieth Acosta from Colombia who are in Uganda for the @forbesafrica magazine interviews. I enjoyed the rich interaction with some questions I always had about South America answered by these two young people. I was always intrigued by the failure of Simon Bolivar, one of my favorite 19th-century Latin American fighters. His inability to unite the greater Columbia (Panama, Ecuador, Venezuela) and bring them into a union with Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, and others in a pan-South American federation yet the north under George Washington had shown what could be done, always intrigued me. Karen told me it has become practically impossible to unite these now independent countries even for new leaders who try to follow in the footsteps of Bolivia, like Hugo Chavez. I was reminded of my own home and continent, Africa. When we miss the opportunity to work together as nations while it is still possible, we set the next generation on a difficult path. Giorgia and Karen are reminders of how when people travel and interact with the world, they drop stereotypes and prejudices that stand in the way of uniting our world. These young people are a wonderful pair and they will do much for their world.
