Talent Buddies is a chill community of folks who are eager to share stories and learn all kinds of cool stuff to help build their career and make their dreams come true. We - Julia, Alena, and Kate - used to work for the same company, and we liked it so much that we couldn't stop and decided to develop our own project. Private companies are required to hire UAE citizens to keep them employed. It sounds simple, but in practice it's not that easy. Locals usually prefer to work in government agencies, where salaries are much higher. For example, I once talked to the Head of Emiratization, and she told me that at uni students are immediately promised: "After graduation you will receive at least 15,000 dirhams (about $4,000)!" 🤯 Now imagine: there are only 11% of Emirates in the country, and the rest are expats. More rejections, more frustration, and a longer job search. Picture this: the listing clearly states they need someone experienced in making chocolate donuts. But who applies? People with experience in cherry pies and vanilla donuts or no relevant experience at all. Here are three reminders to help you avoid this: 1️⃣ Read carefully. If you don’t meet the core requirements, you’re probably wasting time for both you and the recruiter. 2️⃣ Show your skills clearly. If you have the needed skills, emphasize them in your CV with specific examples of your achievements. 3️⃣ Be cautious with vague listings. Let’s dive into personal branding — something I touched on in my last post. If you’re looking to grow, both within your current role and in the market, and you want to build a cushion of social and career security, then personal branding is something worth your attention. Let’s be real: some people start promoting themselves with full energy right from the junior stage. They might not have much experience yet, but they’re already out there making themselves known. Is this good or bad? Honestly, it’s fine. Something is endearing about that youthful enthusiasm (says the old soul in me 👵). Then there are the super specialists or confident mid-level pros who fall into the imposter syndrome trap and say they’ll get to personal branding “someday.” And, of course, some are just too busy. So, where do we even start? When should you think about building your brand? Here are a few key points: 🟣 If you can answer the question, “Why should I build a personal brand?” with something like this: • I know it’ll make me more visible in the market, attract recruiters and hiring managers, and bring in more job offers. • I’ll be more valued at my current job, which could lead to a higher salary and more opportunities—like travel, training, and other perks. • I want to expand my network and build connections that can benefit both my work and any side projects. • I understand that a strong personal brand can help with relocation. If I contribute to the professional community, it’ll be easier to get a talent visa, adapt to a new environment, and increase my chances of landing a great job. 🟣 If circumstances are pushing you that way—like getting invites to speak, or having a proactive marketer, HR, or manager ready to help you get started (this is the easiest way in). 🟣 If people keep asking you for professional advice, and the questions are starting to repeat. You could reach more people and save time by sharing a link, and maybe even monetize it down the road through consultations or expert sessions. 🟣 If you’re feeling bored, craving new challenges, wanting to learn something new, or ready to step out of your comfort zone without making any drastic changes. At the end of the day, it all comes down to desire. It’s your brand. Your time. And if you’re not feeling it, forcing yourself won’t get you anywhere. #career #growth #brand #talentbuddies
