The EU-GCC Cooperation on Green Transition brought together distinguished experts at its 1st Investment & Finance Green Transition Forum in Abu Dhabi. Under team leader Spyros Kouvelis, the EU-GCC cooperation project opened important perspectives on how regions can finance the energy transition. Kouvelis moderated the session spotlight: Building a Green Finance & Investment Ecosystem in the GCC. Jan Haizmann, CEO, ZETA, joined distinguished experts George von Waldburg, Director of Environmental Markets, ICE Futures Europe, and Thomas Bernheim, Policy Analyst, DG Climate Action, European Commission. They discussed carbon markets in the GCC with insights from global and EU experiences, looking at tools like #carbonpricing, taxes, and cap-and-trade systems to reduce emissions. They considered innovative financial instruments, including #greenbonds and sustainability-linked loans, to drive investment in low-carbon technologies. Jan Haizmann emphasized the importance of regional approaches to maximize the capacity of the six GCC countries to commoditize carbon and generate revenues to finance their energy transitions. Congratulations to the EU-GCC Cooperation on Green Transition for hosting such an inspiring and well-organized event!

Unlocking the Potential of net-zero energy carriers (Power, Gases, Fuels and solids) in MENA and, eventually, globally
نبذة عنا
🌍 Welcome to ZETA: we work towards promotion of trading on the path to net zero! 🌱 ZETA (Zero Emissions Traders Alliance), based in UAE, offers a meeting place and a public platform for companies and organisations with an interest in creating wholesale traded markets in climate neutral products. The vision is an emerging MENA ‘net zero emissions’ energy market including exports to neighboring countries and globally. 🌟 Our Vision: ZETA will be proposing a suitable market framework and transaction tools, including standard contracts, with a view to facilitating climate neutrality in the MENA region and beyond. We expect the creation of markets and the use of market-based mechanisms will help achieve climate neutrality combined with energy security at least cost. ZETA will assist our members in dealing with the transition from just trading fossil fuels and electrons to trading low carbon and renewable energy carriers. 🔥 Our Purpose: ZETA is an initiative launched by Dii Desert Energy with the help of international experts in designing markets in wholesale power and gas, carbon and green certificates. ZETA and prime movers engaging in ZETA may expect to take on the responsibility of combining the forces of traders with producers, suppliers and consumers of energy in the MENA region, so as together to give shape to a new set of markets. ZETA will offer a meeting place and a public platform for companies with an interest in creating wholesale traded markets in climate neutral products. These may be zero and low carbon. 🌐 Join the Movement: Is clean energy trading part of your business vision and strategy? Join ZETA's community of trailblazers, governments, and companies shaping the 'net zero' landscape. This week at COP29, the global carbon market took a major step forward with the adoption of new standards under Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement. 🌍✨ These standards open pathways for both transitioning existing projects and launching new initiatives within the Article 6.4 framework, establishing a solid foundation to scale impactful climate actions. Rigorous oversight of carbon removals and broader methodologies is now in place, aligning with ZETA (Zero Emissions Traders Alliance)'s mission to foster transparent and integrated low-emission markets, particularly across the MENA region. 🌱 However, much work remains. Critical technical aspects—such as creating a mechanism registry and designating operational entities—are still under development and essential for Article 6.4 to become fully operational. 🛠️📈 As #COP29 progresses, we’re proud to contribute insights as part of the Türkiye delegation and support a global carbon market rooted in transparency and accountability. Together, we’re building a sustainable future where carbon markets serve as powerful tools for climate action and economic resilience. Stay tuned as we help shape these standards for a low-emission world! 🌏 Kutalmış Ersoy Jan Haizmann

🌍 Insights on Clean Hydrogen Standards at ADIPEC 🌍 This week, ZETA Secretary General Jan Haizmann joined an ADIPEC Exhibition and Conference panel in Abu Dhabi, exploring the evolving global frameworks for clean hydrogen. When Dr Carole Nakhle, CEO of Crystol Energy, asked about the concept of “colorblind” hydrogen, Jan emphasized that while color labels (e.g., "green" or "blue") aren't entirely wrong, they currently hinder the market by fragmenting limited liquidity. As the market matures, he believes color distinctions could foster diverse product markets with varied pricing. Daria Nochevnik, Director of Policy & Partnerships at Hydrogen Council, echoed the need for a unified global emissions standard in hydrogen production, advocating for ISO standards to streamline production, conditioning, and transport. The panel also examined COP28’s progress toward a unified certification framework for hydrogen, with Jan stressing the importance of international recognition: “National standards are essential, but compliance markets need internationally fungible certificates.” Drawing lessons from LNG's growth, Jan highlighted that while today’s technology allows hydrogen markets to scale faster, a unified certification system is still needed. Flexible contracts, with mechanisms to manage regulatory and certification shifts, will also support investment and balance buyer-seller risks. Thanks to fellow panellists Wael Almazeedi of Avance Labs and Nikunj Gupta of ADNOC Group for contributing to this crucial conversation. #ADIPEC2024 #Hydrogen #CleanEnergy #ZETA #SustainableFuture
