In 2008, I began a mission to promote sustainable practices through LEED V2.2 projects, driven by a passion to conserve energy and water resources for #Jordan and the #Arabworld. A topic of highest concern: 🌟 Emerging Contaminants: Challenges and Solutions 🌟 I will be moderating a panel dialogue on emerging contaminants at the upcoming Innovation Driven Water Sustainability IDWS Conference, organized by the Saudi Water Authority (SWA). This session will take place at 9.45 AM on 27 November 2024, in Jeddah. Our panel will bring together experts to discuss the growing concern surrounding emerging contaminants in water, such as pharmaceuticals, microplastics, and industrial chemicals. These contaminants pose significant challenges for water quality and public health. We will explore the risks they present, how they are detected, and the technological and regulatory innovations needed to address them. Challenges: 💊 Emerging contaminants can disrupt endocrine systems, cause toxicity, and accumulate in the food chain, posing significant risks to both human health and aquatic ecosystems. 💊 They are often present in low concentrations, making detection and monitoring difficult. 💊 Existing regulations often do not cover many emerging contaminants, leading to insufficient monitoring and control measures. Solutions: 💚 Innovations in water treatment, such as advanced oxidation processes, membrane filtration, and bioremediation, are being developed to effectively remove these contaminants. 💚 Collaboration among scientists, policymakers, and industry stakeholders is crucial for developing comprehensive strategies to address these issues. 💚 Increasing public awareness about the sources and impacts of emerging contaminants can help reduce their release into the environment and support regulatory efforts. Coming to oversized system design, there’s an interesting anecdote, from early 2000. We had worked on a residential villa (3 storied) in Riyadh. I had designed the HVAC system and the design consultants were from Europe. It was forwarded to them and came back ‘Approved as submitted’. So the project was executed, tested, commissioned and handed over, completing even the defects liability period of one year. After nearly five years, I received a call from my Main Contractor to attend a meeting regarding the above project. In the meeting, I came to understand, that an exact replica of the earlier villa was being planned to be built by the brother of our earlier client, just besides the old villa. For that they were asked to follow the earlier projects As built drawings. The main contractor, supervising consultants, MEP subcontractors were all different from earlier setup. So there was a concern raised by the MEP subcontractor that the earlier HVAC design was under sized by at least 20%. So basically the conversation proceeded as follows; I: Did you visit the original villa? He: Yes I: Was the HVAC system on? He: Yes I: Was it cooling to required set point. He: Yes I: Was there any complaint from the client concerning less cooling in any space? He: No. I: So what’s the issue? He: Your design is not supposed to work as per our calculation. I: There are some things such as diversity factor, safety factors, peak load optimization etc., which can be tweaked to jack up the load, without any concern for energy consumption and other costs. Inspite of everything you have just confirmed, by visiting the existing villa, if you still believe my design is undersized, I rest my case. Representatives of various stakeholders who were following our conversation, understood the whole situation, thanked me for my time and apologized for bothering me unnecessarily.
