As an entrepreneur turned Venture Partner with Kalaari Capital, I have the unique experience of sitting IC meetings on the other side of the table. And the view is so different. Over the past decades, I have pitched to many, many investors. I got better at it as time went on. But it was never easy. Now as I sit in on IC meetings, hearing different founders pitch, there are certain forced errors lot of them unintentionally end up making. This question was asked to the Kalaari partnership - here are their insights: 👁️Glossing over the vision Some founders are self effacing - they shy away from making what might sound like a grandiose statement. That is a mistake. Lay out your vision clearly - veteran investors like Vani Kola are looking for that unique insight that only a founder can have. 📢 Long introductions Knowing when to stop pitching yourself and start pitching your idea is important. It comes with practice. A good rule of thumb is to spend no more than 8-10 mins on the intro - the more concise the better as Karthik Nageswaran recommends. 📚Not researching the firm VC firms and investors have their own thesis. Smart founders know it before they enter the room. Do as Vamshi Reddy suggests - understand the firm, the partners & their thesis. 🏆Generic statements VC firms have done research on your sector in general. They probably know the TAM better than you. Your right to win should be rooted in specifics. Kiran Vasireddy right suggests a clear focus on differentiation beyond generic statements. 📊Unsubstantiated claims Founders end up making lots of claims when pitching. Sampath P advises to back them up with real & relevant feedback & data. 👯‍♀️ Insufficient prep The associates on the deal are your champions in the firm. They are motivated to help founders sucessfully pitch. Reaching out to them for info is an easy way to know the people on the investment committee. No ecosystem in the world can beat Silicon Valley. There’s no doubt that startup scene in Silicon Valley (SV) is unique. I was recently in SV and witnessed how this ecosystem has evolved over the years and why I believe it is still the best in the world. Eg, NVIDIA got a plaque at Denny's restaurant, the place where founders first met. Why Silicon Valley continues to thrive as ecosystem? 1. Access to VC risk capital for entrepreneurs with disruptive ideas 💡 2. Access to patient capital: Investors are in the long games to help entrepreneurs persist or pivot or navigate through macro-economic dynamics. 3. Access to quality research: Best example is Stanford University . Researchers collaborate with entrepreneurs closely to level up and differentiate the startups. 4.MAX over MIS : Investors don’t chase entrepreneurs every now and then for MIS instead they ask how they can help MAXIMIZE on their business providing entrepreneurs with valuable business connections. 5. Trustworthy Partners: You will find the right kind of partners who give their helping hand to raise startups creating a conducive environment for entrepreneur to succeed (eg., free credits, platform waivers, non-exclusive collab). It takes a village to raise a child. It takes a right ecosystem to rise a #founder. Help disruptive entrepreneurs dream BIG, Ecosystem should not kill their #innovation spirit.

The process of getting deeper into the Indian start-up ecosystem as an angel investor and limited partner (2 new hats of mine since 2023) is well on its way. Today spent the day attending Ivycap day 2024 as a special attendee. getting to understand the dynamics of investing, assessing business models and plans, valuation and most importantly founders. should have started a bit earlier but then no regrets. these new hats are part of a larger connecting the dots am attempting.

Rohan Mirchandani's death due to sudden cardiac arrest is shocking but startup ecosystem need to take some learnings from such tragic news. Even in the recently concluded event of D2C Insider CXO South Meet at Bangalore last week, we tried to spread the awareness that the biggest moat for a startup is it's founder's gut health. Truly heartbroken to hear this news. It’s a stark reminder that without good health, life can quickly come to a halt. The key question we should be asking today is: What truly sets a startup apart? The answer is simple the founder’s health and well-being. That’s the real, lasting competitive edge! While we all know our time here isn’t infinite, prioritizing health over work is essential. As angel investing in India matures into a recognised asset class, we are seeing a shift in the investor profile. Younger professionals with high-paying roles are stepping into the space, alongside athletes, actors, and other non-traditional investors. This diversification signals a broader acceptance of angel investing as a high-risk but impactful avenue for wealth creation and ecosystem development. The emergence of alternative capital sources such as micro-venture capital firms, government-backed incubators, and venture debt is redefining the early-stage funding narrative as well. Investors to Founders: Kab khoon khaulega re tera Faisal? ISRO - Indian Space Research Organization - Naam hee kafi hai. An organization which have a long list of challenges like: 1/ Bugudtery constraints 2/ Talent acquisition 3/ Commercialization 4/ Geopolitical negotiations It still gives 2.5x the return to the government. Just think what they would have done if they got funding like SpaceX This is what happens when processes run an organization. Founders pride themselves on running startups on a need-to-do basis. This is good when you start and at a very nascent stage. Once you grow, you need to rely on the process. One of my early mentors in the startup ecosystem told me, that if your presence is required to run your startup, you will never be able to grow. You need process-oriented flow. Founders like D2C. It’s just not a VC favourite. While D2C continues to be wildly popular among consumers, as is also clear from the number of D2C IPOs in India, there are mainly two friction points for VCs when investing in them. First, it’s tough to scale brands beyond INR 100 Cr ARR, especially given the poor brand loyalty and fierce competition in the space. These challenges eventually dilute the ROI and prolong exits for VCs. Second, the more the brands raise initially, the more they’re forced to grow later at any cost. This can result in distraction from the main business, severe cash burn, and funding issues. All in all, it is a good business for founders who don’t raise too much money and for folks with self-employment ambitions. Expecting a lot more consolidation in the space going forward - brands that do it well will scale.

𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐬: VC firms have consistently delivered impressive returns for their limited partners (LPs). Notably in some VC firms, 90% of funds were initially allocated to public markets, with only 10% invested in the unlisted segment, including venture capital and angel funds. Over time, this allocation has shifted to a 60:40 split, with 40% now dedicated to unlisted equity investments. For instance, an early-stage fund recently closed its largest India-dedicated fund with around 40% of the capital coming from Indian LPs. Funding comes for small and large ventures, but gap exists for deals within small to Large.
