Trade Mission Diary – Day 1 Location: Heriot-Watt University Dubai The first day of the trade mission was a perfect balance of insight, networking, and opportunities. The day began with introductions, setting the tone for what promises to be a great experience. Bruce Pritchard of Heriot-Watt University gave a warm welcome, highlighting the university’s role in fostering innovation and collaboration in the UAE. Robbie Dyet from the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) UAE provided an overview of the trade mission’s purpose and objectives, followed by Imad from the Export Support Service, who shared valuable guidance on export strategies. Graham Scopes from UK Export Finance rounded out the morning introductions with practical advice on financial support for international projects. Sustainable Infrastructure and Energy Panel Discussion The panel discussion on sustainable infrastructure and energy was a standout session. Industry leaders, including Katy Holmes, Tadhg O’Donovan, Steve Dering, Robbie Dyet, Lindsey Malcolm, and Bradley Jones, addressed pressing topics such as: • Decarbonisation and retrofitting • Change of use in urban development • Infrastructure opportunities and challenges • Emerging trends like data management, AI, machine learning, and their impact on tourism and infrastructure development The discussions were forward-thinking and thought-provoking, sparking ideas about future collaborations and market trends. Meet-the-Buyer Presentations The highlight of the morning was the Meet-the-Buyer session, where leading companies shared their insights and requirements for doing business in the UAE. Presentations included: • Ed James (MEED): Market insights and business opportunities in the UAE • Mace: Discussion on infrastructure projects and collaboration opportunities • McLaren (Lyndon Hives): Insights into large-scale construction projects • Alec (Severin Tenim): Challenges and opportunities in UAE infrastructure • Hassan Allam Holdings (Marwa Abuafia): Regional project highlights This session offered invaluable guidance on navigating the business landscape and connecting with key players in the UAE market. Networking Lunch The networking lunch provided an excellent opportunity to connect with fellow delegates and UAE-based professionals. These informal conversations often open the door to new partnerships and collaborations. Kuwait Urban Developments Presentation A key highlight of the afternoon was a presentation from the Deputy Director General for Planning and Design in Kuwait. The focus was on the future of smart cities, including ambitious plans for urban development and design in the region. Tour of Heriot-Watt University The day concluded with a tour of Heriot-Watt University’s state-of-the-art facilities. The university’s commitment to research and innovation left a lasting impression and underscored its role as a bridge between academia and industry in the UAE. Looking forward to Day 2!
