The Chagford Inn
3.8/511 Reviews
We visited 3 times whilst staying in Chagford for our weeks Staycation this year. Food and service was brilliant every time. Very attentive staff, food was very well presented and tasted amazing. Especially loved the Risotto, Katsu burger & Choux buns!! They were also very COVID safe which was great to see in the current times. Definitely recommend if you’re in the area. Thanks so much for having us.
Kestor Inn, Manaton, Dartmoor National Park, Newton Abbot, Devon
4.4/560 Reviews
when we arrived we received a warm welcome from the owners. We found the room clean light and airy with a great view of Dartmoor. The free internet was really useful and the refitted bathroom was very clean. Downstairs the bar was well stocked with a good range of drinks and snacks. There was a small shop selling a good range of food for visitors and guests also a nice range of professional photos of Dartmoor which would either make a nice wall picture or a gift. The Restaurant was light and airy with lovely views of the surrounding hills. The evening meal was well cooked and very tasty. The breakfast too was lovely with a good selection of fruits and cereals. It was our first visit to the Kestor Inn although I lived in the area when I was a teenager attending the then Heathercombe Brake School at Heatree House in the late 1970's early 1980's. It is now Heatree Activity Centre, still run by the Heathercombe Brake Trust. Dartmoor it's self remains much the same over the years I would recommend visiting local sites such as Hound Tor, Hay Tor, Becky Falls, Jay's Grave, Heatree Activity Centre (by appointment), Higher Heathercombe Centre (by appointment), Widecombe in the Moor, Moretonhamstead, Dartmeet, Princetown with Dartmoor Prison and local town of Bovey Tracey. Local transport is limited so best book a taxi in advance especially in the peak holiday season. Also remember to take waterproof clothing as the weather isn't always fine. Happily the weather was fine and hot when we visited. In the evening we enjoyed a lovely drink in the beer garden after our school reunion. We will certainly be returning to the Kestor Inn as the service and food is outstanding and we would certainly recommend the Kestor Inn if you are staying on or near Dartmoor.
Cbh Ilsington Country Hotel

What a find this hotel was! Situated on the southern edge of the Dartmoor National Park and a short drive from the A38, you really are in the middle of nowhere here. The public rooms are all very comfortable and modern but with that homely, country house hotel feel. Our bedroom was lovely; clean and with the most luxurious bed and bedding. The bathroom had been recently updated and the the views over Dartmoor were to die for. The food was quite simply, stunning. We were spoilt for choice and had trouble each evening deciding what to chose. The quality of the produce was a standout but the execution and presentation was beautifully done. The spa was the icing on the cake: a decent size swimming pool, lovely sauna and steam room and one of the biggest and best jacuzzis we have ever been in, complete with water jets and areas you can actually lie in. The hotel offers a selection of treatments reasonably priced with 10% off for guests. We sampled two and both were fabulous! From the welcome on our arrival to our departure, the service was super warm, friendly and professional. Everyone we met deserves a mention, so thank you to: George, Imogen, Dave (thanks for the tips on where to go and how to best get there!), Tom (we loved the banter!), Hollie (spelt correctly!), Mike, Sheila and Emma (good luck with the driving lessons!). We will certainly return. In fact we are already planning visit number 2!
The Moorland Hotel, Haytor, Devon
4.5/596 Reviews
Wonderful place to return to and to be so near to the Haytor rocks and paths. The amazing Dyson hairdryer made short work of rain-swept hair after a short walk. Everything perfect in the room; a delightful dinner, beautifully served, and a piano player! Breakfast in welcome sunshine then another walk. Again please!
Bovey Castle
4.4/593 Reviews
I was lucky enough to receive a gift voucher for Bovey Castle as a gift and what better way to spend it than enjoying a festive afternoon tea. Bovey Castle located within Dartmoor National Park is a stunning 5 Red Star, award winning country manor hotel, spa and golf resort, offering a first class luxury experience. We were greeted and welcomed by friendly doorman whom took our details and temperatures before we entered as part of their covid 19 precautions which was very reassuring. Once we were given the all clear we were shown to the Great Western Restaurant and told we were free to enjoy and explore the hotel. Full of country charm and character finished off with beautiful seasonal decorations, a stunning setting for a festive feast. Service was friendly and prompt. We were given the choice of tea's and coffee, and the option to add champagne, presecco or a glass of mulled wine to enhance your experience for a small charge. Afternoon tea was presented nicely, a delicious feast for the eyes and tasted even better than it looked. We opted for a glass of mulled wine to add an extra bit of festive cheer, which was full of seasonal flavours. The savoury tier offered the following finger sandwiches; Roast turkey and cranberry Mature cheddar cheese and onion Oak smoked salmon and lemon butter Honey roast ham and pickle Served with Chestnut and Clementine Sausage Roll and a Pear and Blue Cheese Quiche. Everything was super tasty and full of flavour. Our favourite being the chestnut and Clementine sausage roll. This was followed by the traditional Fruit and plain scones served with ample clotted cream and mulled wine jam. The jam was fruity with a hint of festive spice, delicious and novel although a little runny. This was accompanied by a slice of traditional stollen, a favourite of mine. The sweet tier offered Yule log with orange and vanilla butter cream Honey and cinnamon macaroon Cherry and pistachio choux Spiced apple mince pie Everything was delicious, nothing was too rich, we loved the honey a cinnamon macaroon with indulgent honey and cinnamon ganache. We really enjoyed our experience, and everything offered as part of our afternoon tea, stunning setting, great food and service. Would recommend and definitely come back for a special occasion. Perfect for a special treat.
Passage House Hotel
3.8/5100 Reviews
The hotel is in a very picturesque location, overlooking a lake. The bedrooms are large, with comfortable beds and prices for a stay are very reasonable. Having said that, the completely uncalled for surly, unfriendly and distinctly unhelpful of one member of staff at reception when we returned to the hotel after going to the Newton Abbot races soured the overnight stay for our group of 7. Firstly, after serving drinks to two members of our group, who arrived at the hotel ahead of the rest of us, he didn't allow them to take the drinks outside to a veranda area so they could have a smoke and could provide no good reason for refusing the polite request. Secondly, when the rest of us arrived at the hotel at around 11.30pm the bar was shut and he refused to serve us any drinks, even though we asked politely, merely wanting one more drink before going to bed. He was also curt, rude and distinctly unhelpful when we asked him to point us in the direction of our rooms, giving one word answers and seeming to regard us all as a hindrance to him. All in all, this experience made us regret our choice of hotel and we are disinclined to return to the hotel in future. A further gripe was that the breakfast service was poor and slow, with cooked breakfasts taking 25 minutes to arrive and many key items missing and not replenished unless guests specifically asked, including cups, tea bags, sugar and orange juice,
