Araliya Beach Resort & Spa Unawatuna- Where You Meet the Sea All Year
4.3/561 Reviews
Our experience with Araliya Beach Resort has been nothing short of appalling. Following a terrible lunch at their Ala Carte Restaurant on December 6, 2024—where inattentive staff repeatedly ignored us, and I was double charged due to their faulty POS system—we decided to cancel our upcoming booking for December 30, 2024, to January 2, 2025. Unfortunately, this decision led to an even more frustrating ordeal. Despite canceling within the allowed time frame and providing all necessary details for a refund of LKR XXX,XXX (already paid in full), we were subjected to endless delays and incompetence. The refund process took over 14 days, which is both unreasonable and unacceptable for a modern hospitality establishment. Multiple emails and calls were required just to get an acknowledgment, and staff consistently passed the buck without taking accountability. Management’s lack of communication and inability to resolve issues promptly reflects their complete disregard for customer service. What should have been a seamless process turned into a drawn-out and aggravating experience. This resort’s poor service, mismanagement, and unprofessional behaviour have ruined any chance of us recommending it to anyone. Save yourself the headache—avoid Araliya Beach Resort at all costs. 0/5 stars.

There is no hot water. I don't know if it is raining or what is the reason, there is no hot water when taking a shower.
Villa Thawthisa the Boutique Hotel Unawatuna

The view is great and breathtaking during sunset. They keep the hotel premises and garden clean. But when entering to the hotel, we feel like its an isolated/neglected place. Path is broken and both sides covered with ugly trees and bushes. No one to look at until we park and go to the reception. People park the vehicles wherever they want blocking other vehicles (we had to wait nearly half an hour to move our vehicle because someone was blocking it).We got a deluxe room with pool access. The bathroom design is so stupid and uncomfortable design. Rooms are not nice as the photos they have posted in web. Room amenities are ok but furniture and design of the room looks cheap. There is a very small staff. They looked like some random people found for day pay. Restaurant has no proper AC. We were sweating while having meals. There was only one guy to serve us who is not even wearing a mask. Special thank should go to the Chef. He had arranged very tasty food for the limited budget(we heard how they discuss the meal budget and all. They were too noisy and disturbing). Meal quantity is really small. Took longer time to serve. However next day breakfast was a buffet which was better. Rooftop is flooded when raining. Such a beautiful view is wasted. Elevator is out of service and we have to climb 4 floor to the restaurant. (this was reported in other reviews posted long ago). Such a beautiful location is wasted due to mismanagement.
Thambapanni Retreat

Firstly this probably merits 3.5 out of 5. The reason is I felt quite disappointed when we arrived, having booked directly with the hotel and asking for “Superior” rooms which bear no resemblance to the Superior ones shown on the well-known booking site. I initially thought we’d been given the wrong rooms and had to double check with reception . We had two rooms which at $96 per night were the most expensive of our trip. We don’t normally spend a lot on hotels so this was meant to be a treat at the end of a long tour. These rooms were pretty basic, smelt quite musty as they were built in to the rock face, had many steps to reach and the sofa in one room was torn. The mosquito net had several holes in it. I understand that Sri Lanka has had a rough time recently but to charge these kind of prices, especially in the low season is not really justifiable. The hotel really needs a good returb, and I noticed that the rooms below ours were being updated during our stay. Plus points were the staff - absolutely amazing, helpful and polite and the food which was delicious- try the fresh fish/seafood plates. Also it was really difficult to find! Put up a sign board! The hotel has some way to go before it can be accurately described as a “luxury boutique hotel”. Overpriced.
Thaproban Beach House

Unawatuna Beach
My review, of course, will not be about this hotel, but about the hotel of this chain, Thaproban Pavilion Resort & Spa. We booked a room at the Thaproban Beach House Hotel, when we came to check in, it turned out that our reservation at this place was missing, and we had a reservation at the Thaproban Pavilion Resort & Spa. Thanks to the Trip.com team for helping us understand and resolve issues. And the Thaproban Pavilion Resort & Spa turned out to be much better than the Thaproban Beach House. True, it is not on the beach, but the beach is 5-7 minutes away. The hotel is super, all the amenities, large rooms overlooking the ocean. Very tasty breakfasts, 2 swimming pools on site, one with salt water. In general, I highly recommend the hotel. We really liked it. And we never regretted that we moved into it.
Watergate Resort Unawatuna

The hotel is a 5 to 8 minute walk from the busier beach end of the road, making it a quiet hotel which we really appreciated. The sunset from the hotel is wonderful and you can see Galle Lighthouse in the distance. All of the staff are exceptionally helpful and friendly. The rooms are well kept and housekeeping come every day, even if you ask in the evening. All rooms have A/C and a mini fridge, you are also provided with 2 bottles of water each day. There are tea and coffee making facilities. There's a good shower, with toiletries available if needed. There is fresh fruit and juice , pancakes, cereal and English breakfast with eggs of your choosing each day. A couple of days an Sri Lankan breakfast was offered. There are tuk tuks nearly always just outside the hotel, prices in Unawatuna and Galle are much higher here than other locations in SL. To get to Galle is 500 to 600 rupees, the lowest we found was 400. To Mirissa is 4000 but you'll be able to get back for 1500. There is a small pool with an outside bar looking over the sea. There are plenty of sunbeds and the pool is often quiet during the day. The only comment I would have is that the pool could be a little cleaner. It's by no means terrible and I still used the pool happily. The last couple of days the water did look a little murky compared to the previous 12 days, but the staff were aware and trying to rectify the problem. All in all an excellent stay for a good price.
