“Matenadaran” Research Institute of Ancient Manuscripts named after Mesrop Mashtots

Ameriabank CJSC has joined the Matenadaran's "Homecoming of Manuscripts" campaign. Matenadaran and AmeriaBank have signed a memorandum of cooperation as part of the "Homecoming of Manuscripts" program. This memorandum establishes a fund to enhance Matenadaran's capacity to acquire valuable Armenian manuscripts. With funding from AmeriaBank, Matenadaran has already received two manuscripts and ten miniatures with significant historical, cultural, and scientific value. Ameriabank CJSC -ը միացել է Մատենադարանի «Մատյանների տունդարձը» արշավին։ Մատենադարանը և Ամերիաբանկը «Մատյանների տունդարձը» ծրագրի շարջանակում համագործակցության հուշագիր են ստորագրել։ Հուշագրի շրջանակում կստեղծվի ֆոնդ, որը կընդլայնի Մատենադարանի՝ արժեքավոր հայկական ձեռագրեր ձեռք բերելու հնարավորությունները: Ամերիաբանկի ֆինանսավորմամբ արդեն իսկ Մատենադարանին ընծայաբերվել է պատմամշակութային և գիտական լուրջ արժեք ներկայացնող 2 ձեռագիր մատյան և 10 մանրանկար։

Ivet Tajaryan, Head of the Matenadaran Museum and Senior Researcher in the Department of Oriental Studies, along with Greta Gasparyan, a Researcher in the Department of Medieval Art Studies and a Postgraduate Student, conducted research at the Archives and Manuscript Depository of the Holy Savior Monastery in New Julfa from January 26 to 31 of this year. Ivet Tajaryan focused on studying the Shah's edicts, Persian decrees, and archival documents about the New Julfa community. Meanwhile, Greta Gasparyan examined several manuscripts written and illustrated in New Julfa related to her PhD dissertation. Մատենադարանի Թանգարանի ղեկավար, Արևելագիտության բաժնի ավագ գիտաշխատող Իվեթ Թաջարյանը և Միջնադարյան արվեստի ուսումնասիրման բաժնի գիտաշխատող, ասպիրանտ Գրետա Գասպարյանը սույն թվականի հունվարի 26-ից 31-ը հետազոտություն են իրականացրել Նոր Ջուղայի Սբ Ամենափրկիչ վանքի Արխիվատանը և Ձեռագրապահոցում: Իվեթ Թաջարյանն ուսումնասիրել է շահական հրովարտակներ, Նոր Ջուղայի համայնքին առնչվող պարսկերեն հրամանագրեր և արխիվային փաստաթղթեր, իսկ Գրետա Գասպարյանը իր թեկնածուական ատենախոսությանը վերաբերող` Նոր Ջուղայում գրված և նկարազարդված մի քանի ձեռագիր մատյաններ:

Two researchers of the Matenadaran, Senior Researcher, Ph.D. in History Garnik Harutyunyan and Junior Researcher Tatevik Stepanyan, participated in a professional training at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) within the framework of the Erasmus+ program, as part of the scientific staff exchange for the winter semester 2024-2025. Garnik Haruyunyan, under the guidance of his host Professor Christos Arabatzis (Χρήστος Αραμπατζής), held meetings and professional discussions with a number of professors of the School of Theology of the Aristotle University. At the suggestion of the professors of the School of Theology, G. Harutyunyan delivered a lecture on Armenian manuscripts, their collections and especially on the Matenadaran and its activities, entitled “The Treasury of Manuscripts – Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, the MATENADARAN”, after which the lecturer answered the questions of the students, professors, and guests present. Tatevik Stepanyan attended Greek language courses dedicated to Ancient Greek poetry and prose, as well as other courses in linguistics coordinated by Professor of Linguistics Despoina Papadopoulou (Δέσποινα Παπαδοπούλου) at the School of Philology of the Aristotle University. Մատենադարանի գիտաշխատողները՝ ավագ գիտաշխատող, պ. գ. թ. Գառնիկ Հարությունյանը և կրտսեր գիտաշխատող Տաթևիկ Ստեփանյանը, Էրազմուս+ ծրագրով մասնագիտական վերապատրաստում են անցել Սալոնիկի Արիստոտելի համալսարանում (Հունաստան)՝ 2024-2025 թթ. ձմռան կիսամյակի գիտական անձնակազմի փոխանակման շրջանակում։ Գառնիկ Հարությունյանը Արիստոտելի համալսարանի Աստվածաբանության բաժանմունքում (School of Theology) հանդիպումներ և մասնագիտական քննարկումներ է անցկացրել Աստվածաբանության ֆակուլտետի մի շարք դասախոսների հետ՝ հյուրընկալող պրոֆ. Խրիստոս Արաբացիսի (Χρήστος Αραμπατζής) համակարգմամբ։ Հոկտեմբերի 17-ին Աստվածաբանության բաժանմունքի դասախոսների առաջարկով տեղի է ունեցել Գ․ Հարությունյանի բանախոսությունը՝ նվիրված հայերեն ձեռագրերին, դրանց հավաքածուներին և հատկապես Մատենադարանին ու նրա գործունեությանը՝ “The Treasury of Manuscripts – Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, the MATENADARAN” խորագրով, որից հետո բանախոսը պատասխանել է ներկա ուսանող-մագիստրոսների, դասախոսների և հյուրերի հարցերին։ Տաթևիկ Ստեփանյանը Արիստոտելի համալսարանի Բանասիրության բաժանմունքում (School of Philology) մասնակցել է հունարենով անցկացվող դասընթացների՝ նվիրված հին հունարեն պոեզիային ու արձակին, ինչպես նաև այլ դասընթացների լեզվաբանության ոլորտում, լեզվաբանության ամբիոնի պրոֆեսոր Դեսպինա Պապադոպուլուի (Δέσποινα Παπαδοπούλου) համակարգմամբ:

Haykaz Gevorgyan, Senior Researcher at the Department of Oriental Studies at Matenadaran, and Seyedehnasim Fatemin, Junior Researcher, were sent to the Republic of India with funding from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the support of #Matenadaran. The primary goal of their mission was to visit the K. R. Cama Oriental Institute in Mumbai, where they studied several Persian manuscripts housed there. They also traveled to Chennai (formerly Madras), where they visited the Central Institute of Classical Tamil and the Anna Centenary Library. Մատենադարանի Արևելագիտության բաժնի ավագ գիտաշխատող բ. գ. թ. Հայկազ Գևորգյանը և կրտսեր գիտաշխատող պ. գ. թ. Սեյեդեհնասիմ ֆաթեմին Գալուստ Կյուլբենկեան հիմնադրամի ֆինանսավորմամբ և Մատենադարանի աջակցությամբ գործուղվել են Հնդկաստանի Հանրապետություն։ Գործուղման հիմնական նպատակն էր այցելել Մումբայ քաղաքում գտնվող Քամա Արևելագիտության ինստիտուտ (K. R. Cama Oriental Institute)` ուսումնասիրելու այնտեղ պահվող պարսկերեն որոշ ձեռագրեր։Իսկ Չեննայ քաղաքում (նախկին Մադրաս) նրանք այցելել են Դասական Թամիլի Կենտրոնական Ինստիտուտ (The Central Institute of Classical Tamil) և Աննայի Հարյուրամյակի Գրադարան (Anna Centenary Library)։

THE COOPERATION AGENDA WITH THE LEADING CENTRES OF FRANCE IS EXPANDING Ara Khzmalyan, the director of Matenadaran, recently visited the INALCO Institut national des langues et civilisations orientals (Foundation and the National Archivesof France). During these meetings, they discussed upcoming programs related to research, education, and the preservation of written heritage. Khzmalyan proposed enhancing collaboration in Armenian-Medieval studies by incorporating more external professional expertise through joint efforts. He also presented the results of the International Armenian Studies Congress and invited the director of the National Archives of France and restoration specialists to participate in future initiatives. A visit to the archives was organised as part of the international seminar “Faces of Memory,” which will take place at Matenadaran in 2025. The 13th #internationalseminar, "The Faces of Memory," has commenced at Mashtots #Matenadaran. The seminar will focus on the latest technologies for preserving and restoring handwritten and printed heritage. "The Faces of Memory" international seminar is a platform for significant institutions worldwide dedicated to preserving written heritage. Over the past 13 years, it has welcomed over 130 universal organizations and hundreds of professionals, fostering new business connections. Matenadaran is the leading professional centre for written heritage restoration in Armenia and the region. As part of Matenadaran's new development strategy, its role in the written heritage restoration will be expanded to include Armenian spiritual manuscript centres from across the globe, whose representatives are participating in this seminar. The technical re-equipment and infrastructural reforms at Matenadaran are aligned with this objective. The 13th international seminar "The Faces of Memory" is supported by the RA Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, the European Union in Armenia, and Araratbank. During the event, Zhanna Andreasyan, the RA Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, sent her welcome speech. Vassilis Maragos, Head of Delegation, Ambassador of the European Union to Armenia, and Grigor Hovhannisyan, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Araratbank, also delivered their welcome speech. On October 1 and 2, Mashtots Matenadaran participated in the #Gituzhinitiative, organized for the first time in Armenia. The RA Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports, Yerevan Municipality, and the National Academy of Sciences supported the event. At the science festival held in Freedom Square, Matenadaran had its booth and showcased the innovative equipment of the digitization and restoration departments, as well as exhibits on medieval medicine, natural science, painting materials, and recipes. Մաշտոցյան Մատենադարանը հոկտեմբերի 1-ին և 2-ին մասնակցել է առաջին անգամ Հայաստանում կազմակերպված «Գիտուժ» նախաձեռնությանը։ Միջոցառումն իրականացվել է ՀՀ ԿԳՄՍ նախարարության, Երևանի քաղաքապետարանի և Գիտությունների ազգային ակադեմիայի աջակցությամբ։ Ազատության հրապարակում անցկացվող գիտության փառատոնին Մատենադարանը ներկայացել է առանձին տաղավարով ու ցուցադրել թվայնացման, վերականգնման բաժինների նորարական սարքավորումները, ինչպես նաև, միջնադարյան բժշկագիտության, բնագիտության, ներկարարական նյութեր ու բաղադրատոմսեր։ #գիտությանշաբաթ24🧬

🗓️An #exhibition titled "Spiritual Entity, Timeless Images, The Treasures of the Matenadaran and the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin" has opened at Mashtots Matenadaran. The exhibition showcases glass negatives from Matenadaran and the printed photos derived from them for the first time, which hold exceptional historical and ethnographic significance. Additionally, exhibits have been selected from the museums of the Mother See of Holy #Etchmiadzin, the History Museum of Armenia, and the National Gallery of Armenia based on the images. It marks the first public presentation of many of these exhibits. The representatives of the clergy, heads of participating museums, and cultural figures attended the opening ceremony. Մաշտոցյան Մատենադարանում բացվել է «Ոգեղեն իրեր, հավերժացած պատկերներ. Մատենադարանի և Մայր Աթոռ Սուրբ Էջմիածնի գանձերը» խորագրով ցուցադրություն։ Ցուցադրությանը ներկայացված են Մատենադարանում պահվող ապակե նեգատիվներ և դրանցից առաջին անգամ արտատպված լուսանկարներ, որոնք ունեն բացառիկ պատմական ու ազգագրական նշանակություն։ Ըստ լուսանկարների ընտրվել են նաև ցուցանմուշներ Մայր Աթոռ Սբ․ Էջմիածնի թանգարաններից, Հայաստանի պատմության թանգարանից և Հայաստանի ազգային պատկերասրահից։ Ցուցադրության նմուշներից շատերը հանրությանն են ներկայացվում առաջին անգամ: Բացման արարողությանը ներկա են եղել հոգևոր դասի ներկայացուցիչներ, մասնակից թանգարանների ղեկավարներ և մշակութային գործիչներ:

Tatevik Saroyan, the coordinator of Inter-Museum Cooperation and the applicant at Mashtots #Matenadaran, from August 25 to September 13 this year, was sent to the United States of #America for museological training and study of her claim with the support of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The Smithsonian Institution invited Tatevik Saroyan, and she met with specialists from several museums in Washington. She also met with the curators of the National Museum of Asian Art of the Smithsonian Institution, including Massumeh Farhad, Antonietta Catanzariti, and manuscript restorer Keisha Talbert. These specialists presented the Armenian manuscripts in the museum and discussed their restoration works. Ս.թ. օգոստոսի 25-ից սեպտեմբերի 13-ը Մաշտոցյան Մատենադարանի Միջթանգարանային գործակցության համակարգող, Մատենադարանի հայցորդ Տաթևիկ Սարոյանը Գալուստ Գյուլբենկյան հիմնադրամի աջակցությամբ թանգարանագիտական վերապատրաստման և իր հայցորդության ուսումնասիրության նպատակով գործուղվել էր Ամերիկայի Միացյալ Նահանգներ։ Սմիթսոնյան ինստիտուտի հրավերով Տ. Սարոյանը հանդիպումներ է ունեցել Վաշինգտոնի մի շարք թանգարանների մասնագետների հետ, ինչպես նաև Ինստիտուտի Ասիական Արվեստի Ազգային թանգարանի համադրողներ Մասսումի Ֆարհադի, Անտոնիետա Կատանզարիթի և ձեռագրերի վերականգնող Կեյշա Թալբերթի հետ։ Մասնագետները ներկայացրել են թանգարանում պահվող հայկական ձեռագրերը, դրանց վերականգնման աշխատանքները։
