Happy World Wetlands Day! Did you know that besides providing the perfect habitat for birds, fish, invertebrates and plants, protecting our coastal shoreline and water filtration, mangrove forests are powerful carbon sinks? If left undisturbed, mangrove forests store more CO2 per km2 than tropical forests do. Not just double the amount of CO2, but experts believe up to four times as much. Talk about a climate powerhouse! So, here at Kolektivo we are stoked to support the local organization Mangrove Adoption Program (MAP), with a micro-grant to build a nursery. We recently visited one of their mangrove planting mornings, where they mobilized volunteers to help plant mangrove propagules [propagules are the bean-like structures, essentially baby mangroves] in biodegradable pods, specifically developed by MAP for the purpose of propagating mangroves. It was a delightful morning of connecting with like-minded people, learning a lot, sticking hands in the dirt, and overall doing good for Curaçao. Not only that, volunteers were treated to snacks, drinks and a delicious homemade soup. And they got to keep their recyclable MAP cup. Some of the volunteers took home crates full of mini mangroves to foster for several months until they're ready to be planted.
