Biography

Andrew Gower was born on 8 November 1989 in Aintree (near Liverpool, England) and he has been acting since his school years, joining a drama group while studying for his A-Levels. In 2010 Andrew graduated from the Oxford School of Drama, winning the Spotlight Prize in July of the same year.

Series

The majority of Andrew’s work so far has been  for television. He is probably best known for his role as “Bonnie Prince” Charles Edward Stuart in Outlander and playing Nick Cutler, the vampire solicitor in season 4 of Being Human.

Other projects include Gilbert Hankin in the BBC One period drama The Village,  portraying Roman emperor Caligula in the TV mini series A.D. – The Bible Continues and the Great Detective Sherlock Holmes in the Canadian crime drama Murdoch Mysteries.

He appeared in the season 4 episode “Crocodile” of science fiction anthology series Black Mirror and guest starred in season 20 of celebrated British detective drama Midsomer Murders as well as in the final season of popular period drama Poldark as the mentally unstable James Hadfield.

In period crime drama Miss Scarlet and the Duke, he returned to 19th century crime solving as Rupert Parker, the homosexual friend of titular character Eliza Scarlet.

In 2023 audiences saw him as a series regular in the highly anticipated ITV adaption of Bernard Cornwell’s The Winter King playing Sansum the Priest. Andrew also reprised his role of Ezra Spurnrose in season 2 of “fantasy-noir” series Carnival Row.

Most recently Andrew has wrapped filming detective drama Ellis due to be released in autumn 2024. He plays DS Chet Harper, right-hand man to Sharon D. Clarke‘s titular character DCI Ellis.

Film

Andrew has been part of several short films and independent productions that allowed him to work with other notable actors and directors, such as Tom Hiddleston (Out of Darkness, written and directed by Monroe co-star Manjinder Virk) or American comedian and political activist Jon Stewart (Rosewater, alongside Gael García Bernal and Claire Foy).

Short film Ark marked the third time he worked with fellow actress Tamzin Merchant (Carnival Row). In Running Naked he portrayed Ben Taylor, a young cancer survivor struggling with OCD. The NoW production, co-written and directed by award winning director Victor Buhler, was filmed in summer 2018.

Humpty Fu*king Dumpty, the story of Merseybeats musician Tommy Quickly, is a passion project of Andrew’s. Plans to develop the 2020 short film into a full-length feature film are currently put on ice due to other projects.

Music

Andrew is a huge music fan and has recorded several tracks with his former band, Emerson, and also sang some of the songs during the live performance of Frankenstein’s Wedding, a modern musical interpretation of the classic Gothic novel. He also wrote and performed a number of songs for Humpty Fu*king Dumpty.

His band Gustaffson released their first EP ‘Jacaranda’ in August 2022. They are currently working on their first album in collaboration with Elbow‘s Craig Potter and Outlander composer Bear McCreary.

Theatre

Andrew’s stage credits include Seiffert in Conquest of the South Pole at the Arcola Theatre (touring to the Rose Theatre in Kingston) and Charlie in Terror Tales at the Hampstead Theatre. In 2016 he made his West End debut in London playing the lead role of Winston Smith in a stage production of George Orwell’s 1984.

Audio

He played William/Lupin in the radio production of The Diary of a Nobody and Lucian in the BBC4 radio play Dangerous Visions: Speak. You can also hear his voice as Mudlark in the animated short film The Tall Tales of Urchin.

In 2019 he joined the cast of multi-award-winning audio play and conspiracy thriller Tracks: Indigo. He was reunited with his former co-star Manjinder Virk for The Giant Pacific Octopus Maritime School.

Carnival Row creator Travis Beacham‘s cast Andrew in his best-selling Audio Drama Impact Winter in 2023 and Andrew reprised his role in Season 3 in 2024.
