Ratings and Reviews
Love the app- I have a few suggestions!
Overall, I like this app a lot. I find it intuitive, informative and fun. I rope my friends into downloading and playing too- it’s that fun. A few suggestions that would really improve the playability of the app:
- Once it becomes your turn, the call button pops up RIGHT where the prefold button just had been. I’ve started to hit prefold MANY times right as it changed and accidentally called.
- The chat feature needs work. I’d prefer if it could pop up at the bottom and not disappear right away- give you time to actually read the message without having to navigate to a separate page.
These fixes could turn this into a 5 star app, imo.
Glitchy and Offensive
This app is incredibly glitchy and nearly unusable at times, so it doesn’t even fulfill its own practical purpose. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg of the problematic mess this app is.
This app is offensive and created in bad faith. I initially downloaded Poker Power simply because I heard about a more engaging way to learn the game. At first, it was positive to hear that it was targeted toward women+ to include us in a game we’re often excluded from. But after seeming the “+” of women+ ignored and non-binary people erased from the language and imagery of the app, it became obvious that gender inclusion and diversity are just a guise to get you in the door.
Secondly, and worse in my opinion, is the article I read from the founder that prompted me to finally delete this app. She suggests that the reason women struggle to negotiate raises or get into positions of power is because we lack the skills that poker teaches, not because we are battling a patriarchal society built on our discrimination. To suggest “the greatest weakness for women has always been money” in a way that blames them and their implied deficiencies rather than the societal and systemic factors at play is deeply offensive and frankly the exact kind of sexism the founder is claiming to fight.
I’d rather learn poker anywhere else than this glitchy, sexist mess of a company.
Poker Is An Art
I suggest revising the basic instructions provided in the app. For instance, in lesson 7, the statement that "limping is the weakest move you can make" could be rephrased. While it's true that limping is typically considered a “weaker” play compared to raising weak hands, I think you should avoid instructing people to “always raise any hand you want to play” without clear explanation. They will go broke quickly.
When a player limps into a hand, they are simply matching the big blind amount to see the flop without investing additional chips or showing strength in their hand.
It's essential to be cautious with absolute terms like "always" and "never" in poker advice. There are few situations in poker where actions should truly always or never be taken. Poker is a nuanced game that often requires flexibility and adaptability.
