Today, we’re turning the spotlight to Cancer Support Community, one of the inaugural recipients of the BeiGene Foundation’s grants from the Access to Cancer Care Program. Cancer Support Community is a global nonprofit dedicated to uplifting and strengthening people impacted by cancer by providing support, fostering compassionate communities, and breaking down barriers to care. This grant supports their signature Frankly Speaking About Cancer: Cancer Screening program, which educates and empowers patients and caregivers about new developments in cancer screening and improves communication with their healthcare team around this important topic. This week, I had the privilege of spending time in #Japan with my colleague Mark Lanasa, our Chief Medical Officer for Solid Tumors at BeiGene. Our time here reinforced the importance of collaboration and innovation to advance #cancer research and improve patient outcomes.   Japan has one of the world’s most sophisticated healthcare systems, underpinned by a deep commitment to scientific excellence, early diagnosis, universal access, and patient-centric care. Sadly, cancer remains the leading cause of death accounting for one third of deaths in Japan annually. Engaging with esteemed researchers and clinicians across the country reaffirmed that global partnerships are critical to accelerating breakthroughs in oncology.   At BeiGene, we believe that innovation should have no borders. Working together across regions ensures that new insights and treatments reach more patients, faster. In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we hosted an inspiring fireside chat for our colleagues with Dr. Marta Dark-McNeese, Chair of the Department of Physics at Spelman College. Investing in R&D is investing in the future of patient care. The Australian Government's Strategic Examination of R&D is a much-needed opportunity to reshape how we translate scientific breakthroughs into real-world patient access 🌏. Currently, Australia’s R&D investment has declined from 2.25% of GDP in 2008–09 to just 1.68% in 2021–22. This is well below the OECD average of 2.7% (source: industry.gov.au). For patients diagnosed with #cancer and other serious diseases, this isn’t just a statistic. It’s a missed opportunity for innovation, access, and better health outcomes. To truly make an impact, this examination must: ✅ Align R&D investment with patient needs – ensuring that breakthroughs in precision medicine and targeted therapies lead to real, timely access. ✅ Strengthen Australia’s clinical trial infrastructure – expanding trial capacity and regulatory efficiency so that more patients can benefit from cutting-edge research here at home. ✅ Streamline regulatory and reimbursement pathways – bridging the gap between innovation and access by modernizing HTA processes. ✅ Enhance industry-government collaboration – fostering a unified approach across research, biotech, industry, patient groups and healthcare sectors. At BeiGene, we believe that bold investment in R&D, coupled with smarter policy frameworks, will be key to unlocking faster, more #equitable #access to life-saving treatments.
