What makes up the gigantic, imposing sound of a symphony by famous Austrian composer Anton Bruckner? And what was the soundscape like that surrounded Bruckner during his lifetime - a world completely transformed by industrialization? The Ars Electronica Futurelab developed two applications for the Ars Electronica Center in Linz that revolve around these questions, as part of the celebrations of Bruckner's 200th birthday in 2024: "Playing Anton" and "Being Anton". "Playing Anton" is an innovative application for the immersive Deep Space 8K: Here, the audience takes over the formation of the instrumental groups of the Bruckner Orchestra Linz and experiences various facets of the Scherzo from Bruckner’s 9th Symphony, enhanced by impressive 3D visualizations. At the immersive sound space "Being Anton", visitors are immersed in the soundscape of Bruckner's lifetime. Enhanced by a spatial tracking system, visitors explore the sounds of the Industrial Revolution, combined with excerpts from Bruckner’s symphonies – played by the Bruckner Orchestra Linz – as well as choral and organ pieces. The experience is framed by historical context and insights into the correspondence of the exceptional musician. The United Nations campaign “Orange The World” takes place annually between 25th of November, the “International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women”, and 10th of December, the “International Human Rights Day”. During this 16-day period, buildings around the world will be illuminated in orange, thereby sending a visible signal against violence against women. The "Orange the World" campaign is thus helping to break the taboo on this theme. In Austria, Ars Electronica is also taking part in this campaign and today, 10.12.24, the Facade of the Ars Electronica Center will once again be shown in the signature colour of the campaign. Ars Electronica Solutions is supporting a project as part of the European Space Agency - ESA climate initiative in collaboration with the band Massive Attack, which connects art, science, and society. The event in Liverpool, held to celebrate the city’s designation as the first UN Accelerator City for climate action, showcased impressive images from the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission, highlighting environmental changes. A central attraction was the interactive ESA Climate Installation, which allowed visitors to explore Earth observation data and experience the impacts of climate change. The mobile Half Dome Globe, which visualizes global challenges, was another highlight of this installation. Through this project, Ars Electronica Solutions aims to make scientific insights accessible and emotionally engaging using interactive and audiovisual technologies, in line with the Science Experience, which seeks to convey complex topics and create a deeper connection between knowledge and emotions. A new episode of the Digital Deal Podcast is out! Love and the City brings together artist Noemi Iglesias Barrios and Guggenheim New York curator Noam Segal to talk about surveillance systems in the public space and why we might want to 'measure' cities in terms of emotionality by training algorithms to search for signs of love on the streets. Listen to the full episode at https://lnkd.in/dZRaiudv, or wherever you get your podcast. #technology #society #love #artificialintelligence #surveillancesystems #urbansurveillance #digitaldeal

Journey through the impressive architecture of world-famous cathedral Notre-Dame de Paris in stereoscopic 3D, explore historical representations of the construction in the Middle Ages, and zoom into larger-than-life details of the elaborate glass windows: with "Notre-Dame Immersive" in Deep Space 8K of the Ars Electronica Center in Linz. In December 2024, Notre-Dame is reopening after years of reconstruction following the devastating fire in April of 2019. To celebrate the revival, the Ars Electronica Futurelab has brought the Paris landmark into Deep Space 8K as an immersive experience, together with French start-ups Iconem and Histovery. If you live in the US, you can experience the program as an atmospheric artwork in the form of a monumental video at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. As you experience "Notre-Dame Immersive", the program also highlights the importance of new technologies in the preservation and communication of humanity's cultural heritage - a mission the Ars Electronica has been working on for decades. "Notre-Dame Immersive" posed a particular technological challenge as the data of the point cloud - recorded by renowned art historian Andrew Tallon - contains over a billion points and this data has to be rendered in Deep Space 8K in stereoscopic 3D in real time. If you want to learn about the technology behind "Notre-Dame Immersive", visit the Futurelab website https://lnkd.in/dsz4-RiC "Notre-Dame Immersive" is supported by the Bundesministerium für europäische und internationale Angelegenheiten (MFA Austria) and the Institut Français d’Autriche, as part of the strategy for the international dissemination of cultural and creative industries. Additional funding is provided by the Dorotheum GmbH & Co KG and the state of Upper Austria/culture.

Buzzing noises, an inconspicuous window, tropical humidity and the impression of being chased: "Buzz Swatters: Playful Pandemic Prevention" addresses the collective action problem of infectious diseases in an innovative and playful way. The project by the Ars Electronica Futurelab and AI start-up Godot Inc. | Godot GmbH also encompasses how AI can be utilized transparently for a positive impact in society. By navigating interactive challenges, participants experience firsthand the significance of collective efforts in disease prevention - emphasizing the interconnectedness of individual actions and their broader impact on community well-being. With a flyswatter serving as a voting tool, players are involved in a democratic process to make solidary decisions to be implemented in the game. "Buzz Swatters: Playful Pandemic Prevention" is the second collaborative project of the Collective Transformation Lab between Godot and the Ars Electronica Futurelab.
