It's time for PART 4 on the anatomical basics and mechanisms of action of auricular #vagusnerve stimulation in pain management. What we have already discussed:   - The Vagus Nerve and the Innervation of the Outer Ear  - Afferent Stimulation and Activation of Vagal Brainstem Nuclei and the Trigeminal Tract  - The Activation of the Descending Pain Control Network TODAY – The Activation of Limbic Structures and Modulation of Pain Perception Chronic pain is associated with a dysfunction of the mesocortico-limbic system, including the brain reward system, whereas continuous activation of these structures leads to common co-morbidities like depression, anxiety, negative affective state, social isolation or catastrophizing. Auricular vagus nerve stimulation (aVNS) can modulate brainstem nuclei projecting to the limbic system. Thus, aVNS was shown to be able to alter pain perception as well as emotional and motivational responses via the modulation of limbic structures and the prefrontal cortex (including the anterior cingulate cortex, amygdala, ventral tegmental area, nucleus accumbens). This is of vital importance for patients suffering from chronic pain, since the disease affects all areas of life, including the mental health of patients! Looking back to three amazing days at the German Pain Congress last week in Mannheim! The interest at our booth was very strong and we want to thank all visitors for the interesting and in depth discussions on the application of auricular vagus nerve stimulation in chronic pain management! There is a clear need for non-pharmacological solutions to support chronic pain patients. While our poster presentation, we also had a very good discussion on the need of digital solutions to help patients, doctors and therapists within interdisciplinary multimodal pain management, supporting our view of supplying our customers with comprehensive solutions along the whole patient journey.
