Lecture by Isabell Sarah Karmel, RHEON LABS at the Dornbirn-GFC Asia in Korea: "Dynamic Support in Sportswear: The Role of Strain-Rate-Sensitive Polymers" This presentation will explore the unique properties of SRS polymers, their extrusion into high-performance fibres and films, and their application in textiles for sports bras and other adaptive athletic apparel, providing solutions for long-standing challenges in functional design: Traditional elastomeric yarns provide a fixed level of support but cannot adapt their mechanical properties to changes in movement intensity. In contrast, highly strain-rate-sensitive RHEONTM monofilaments and fibres, produced through standard dry extrusion processes, offer 200–400% greater stiffening and dissipate 30–50% more stretch energy depending on strain-rate and material formulation. These dynamic properties enable the creation of #textiles that provide both dynamic support and damping, with stiffness and #energy dissipation increasing with movement intensity. For athletes, this translates to apparel that adapts to their activity, combining comfort and performance. During running, research indicates that breasts can move up to 19 cm if unsupported, generating forces comparable to those experienced by F1 drivers. This movement often leads to discomfort caused by inadequate sports bras, which can fail to provide sufficient support or result in excessive compression. With RHEON’s strain-rate-sensitive (SRS) fibres and films, sports bras can dynamically adjust to movement, offering soft comfort at rest and enhanced support during high-impact activities. Independent testing at the University of Portsmouth Alumni demonstrated that SRS-enhanced sports bras reduce breast displacement by 15%, effectively transitioning medium support at rest to high support during running without compromising comfort. Additionally, SRS thin films, as applied in garments like the adidas Olympic sprint suit for Team GB, provide dynamic muscle support and reduce soft tissue vibrations under high loads. #fiber #textileindustry #fiberinnovation #fibercongress
