🚨🆘#BreakingNews: Emergency mission in Lebanon 🆘🚨 A FOUR PAWS team under Dr Amir Khalil’s lead has travelled to Lebanon for an extremely urgent mission to support the animals in the devastated conflict zone. We have been closely monitoring the situation over the last weeks, and we finally got the green light and all the necessary paperwork to help. Despite our experience in conducting missions in warzones, every time we step into one feels devastating. 💔 Standing in between the ruins of buildings. Walking through cities that were once prospering with life and have now collapsed under the bombardments. Hearing the eerie silence in a place that was filled with life just weeks ago: these are things you can never get used to. Things we are experiencing at this very moment in Lebanon. 📍 The situation on the ground is dire. As the ongoing conflict in the region escalated in September and October, people have fled from the areas most affected, especially in the South of the country. Fearing for their lives, only able to pack the most necessary items, many had to leave their beloved pets behind. 🐈⬛🐕 They are now roaming between destroyed buildings, desperately looking for food and water amidst the debris. Many are sick or injured. A lot of them have lost their lives already. As always in circumstances such as these, nothing is easy, but we count on our experience and will do our best to support as many animals as possible. Together with our local partner Give Me A Paw, and with the support of Sour Strays Welfare, we are offering crucially needed help for the animals on the streets and shelters. 🚑 Additionally, our team provided Mashala Shelter and another private shelter, which is providing a home for approximately 60 abandoned dogs, with food. In total, we already distributed nearly 5 tons of cat and dog food. Big cats face critical threats from poaching and illegal trade. ❌ Not all commercial nor illegal big cat trade activities are accounted for or connected and the number of big cats currently in the trade is unknown, making it hard to track or predict. CatByte's central hub for poaching, trade, and trafficking data of all big cat species connects the dots from trends of big cat crimes to the convergence in the supply chain and provides evidence for legal proceedings and decisions. Safeguarding Swallows During Storms 🐦 Migratory birds, particularly swallows, have been facing significant challenges with the recent extreme weather. In Vienna and Lower Austria, heavy rains and squalls have forced hundreds of swallows to seek shelter on house facades, under bridges, and in other nooks. 🏠🌉 Swallows are uniquely vulnerable because they only hunt insects in flight. 🦟 When bad weather grounds them, they risk starvation. In these situations, it’s important not to scare or disturb them—they need to conserve every bit of energy. 🦅 Unlike other birds, swallows won’t accept food from the ground or a bowl, therefore direct feeding won’t help. Here’s what you could do instead: 🌟 Allow them to rest undisturbed until the weather improves. 🌟 If you have a barn or outbuilding where swallows nest, consider leaving the entrance open—it can offer vital refuge during storms. If you find a swallow on the ground that’s too weak to fly, it’s essential to act quickly. 🎞️ World premiere: Our Documentary “Eating The Future” 🍔❌ Yesterday at the films for future festival in Zürich, Switzerland, the film exposes the many undercover realities behind factory farming. 🏭 Looking into the climate collapse and finding a glimmer of hope in the darkness, consultations with farmers, doctors, scientists, activists, and slaughterhouse workers create further insights with Bafta-winning Mia McKenna-Bruce connecting the dots as narrator. The film takes viewers on a journey of food systems that shape our planet quite literally. The viewing kicked off with our CEO Josef Pfabigan giving a speech and was followed by a round table moderated by Dominik Siegrist. News from #COP29’s Food, Agriculture and Water Day 🌏   Our colleagues Clara Schubert, Sophie Aylmer and Dr. Carolina Nagib Nascimento are on the ground giving a voice to the billions of animals being farmed in intensive agriculture. 🐾 COP29 is focused on financing solutions to the climate crisis. 💰  As only 4.3% of global climate finance is directed towards agriculture, according to The World Bank, and animal agriculture alone accounts for 14.5-20% of total GHG emissions, we urge Parties to ensure that agricultural subsidies are re-allocated to transform food systems and mitigate the #ClimateCrisis!  These funds can support farmers in transitioning away from intensive farming practices and rewarding farmers who already protect animals, people and the planet. For example, silvopastoralism is a diversified and mixed production system that cultivates crops and trees while keeping animals together to forage in open spaces with their social groups. This creates co-benefits like animal welfare and a circular ecosystem. 🔄 These farming systems are both climate mitigation and adaptation measures, and they help achieve biodiversity and sustainable development goals. 🌿 Several false climate solutions are being promoted by agrobusiness, such as “sustainable intensification”, and a shift towards increased poultry and pig production to decrease methane emissions. 😠 These technologies will not help smaller farms to adapt to climate change and are not sufficient to meet the necessary cut in emissions.     Making animal suffering “more sustainable” is not the solution. We must stop funding intensive animal farming and reduce the global number of farmed animals!
