After more than a decade of making London greener, Urban Growth recently ceased activity and will close completely in the coming months. Our priority here is to express our gratitude and joyful memories from the hundreds of projects we worked on, in every corner of London, with such an incredible diversity of partners, clients, funders and participants. Our deepest thanks go out to all of you for the amazing transformations you made possible. Many of them are still thriving, nurtured by the good will, creativity and community spirit of volunteers who want to continue spreading the joy of nature in the heart of the city. While we are of course sad to be closing, there is much to celebrate in our sector, in our city, and in the wider discourse about sustainable urban design, green infrastructure and therapeutic horticulture. These were not common concepts when we started in 2014. In our pitches to businesses and local government, it took a lot of effort to explain that being in nature is good for our wellbeing, that growing food can be a tool for inclusive, healthy cities, and that we could involve everyone in the design, creation and care of public spaces. These are now common concepts for business and government alike. It’s true that the final products we see and the services on offer may not in fact live up to those lofty ambitions…but the ambitions have really improved! For all of the challenges the UK is facing, and despite many undeniable failures of public policy and corporate conduct, our public spaces are on the whole, greener, healthier and more inclusive than they were a decade ago. And we are honoured to have been a small part of that evolution. We were always a tiny company, but we worked with some big fish on some very public projects. Our gardens (which cumulatively covered more than 30,000sqm) were seen, strolled through, learned in, sniffed, cooked with, chewed on and lounged in by millions of people. It was always a challenge to measure the impact of our projects, but we think we helped to shift the needle in the right direction. And it’s still going that way, thanks to the dedication and innovation of amazing people and projects, too numerous to name, who are reclaiming concrete jungles for themselves, for their family and neighbours, and for the incredible biodiversity that teems through our cities. All of us on the team will continue to support and be part of this movement in our different ways, as we move on to new projects and places. Thank you again for ten brilliant years of making London greener together.

Today marks the end of my time as Sustainability Advisor at Impact Hub Vienna. Since sustainability hinges on many moving parts across the organisation, during this time I have worked in many different areas and with different teams. From carbon accounting to Net Zero target setting, hosting events or working with ethics, it has been a year full of collaborations that have inspired action and connection for impact. Here are some of the key projects which have made my stay at Impact Hub so memorable: 📉 Net Zero Roadmap: The sustainability team (Jakob Detering, Paulius B. and me) spent a lot of time designing an ambitious but realistic way for Impact Hub Vienna to reach net zero. The result of months of research, negotiations, hard reality checks, and incredibly inspiring conversations was the Net Zero Roadmap. This is a document where we outline specific steps to reach REAL net zero (90% reductions, with 2023 as baseline year) until 2030, together with the associated risks, opportunities, contingencies, and funding needed. I learned firsthand about the delicate balances at play when planning such a fundamental transformation, and how managing uncertainty is a key factor in making a transparent, realistic plan. 👁️🗨️ Regenerative Dialogues: In this event series, I invited experts in different regenerative practices to present their ideas to an impact audience. Together, we looked for synergies across disciplinary and industry lines, finding new paths forward for creative collaboration beyond the status quo. Our guests ranged from researchers to farmers and even public servants, arranging a truly diverse set of perspectives on some of our most pressing issues. 🧭 Ethical Compass: Based on a framework developed by Alexis Eremia in collaboration with Peter G. Kirchschlaeger at the University of Lucerne, I pushed our team to begin developing a process and structure to deal with ethically ambiguous decisions. This was an especially complicated process, fraught with theoretical discussions and where it was hard to detach the personal ethics from those of the company. But in the end, the drive of the team made it possible to make some great strides towards consciously and systematically living our ideal of creating positive social impact!

Last night, we hosted a conversation with Franz Fischler, former EU Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, in collaboration with Love Politics. His thought-provoking insights reminded us of the critical steps we need to take for a sustainable future: 💡 Learning from the past to shape the future: Franz emphasized that history holds valuable lessons for navigating the challenges ahead. 🌱 The power of humus in the soil: Building humus not only improves soil quality but also combats erosion and reduces CO2 emissions—a natural solution with a big impact. 🔗 EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS): A system Franz supports, it’s a cornerstone of the EU’s climate policy, encouraging industries to cut emissions through a cap-and-trade approach. 🌾 Kaindorf as a model for sustainability: Highlighting the Ökoregion Kaindorf, Franz showcased how communities can unite to achieve ecological and sustainable goals, from circular economies to CO2-neutral initiatives through humus cultivation.
