Exciting Highlights from #ESIB in Graz! Some of our IBD group members participated at the European Summit of Industrial Biotechnology (#ESIB) in Graz! 🎤 Rüdiger Lück presented in a Science Flash his work on: "Continuous biomanufacturing with E. coli: greener production with the phoA promoter system." 🎤 Julian Kopp talked on: "Determining feeding strategies for recombinant Komagataella phaffii strains." We are proud to have shared our advancements in sustainable biomanufacturing and process optimization with such a dynamic community of experts. Looking forward to more discussions and collaborations in the field of sustainable industrial biotechnology! 🌱 #ESIB2024 #IndustrialBiotechnology #ContinuousBiomanufacturing #RecombinantProteinProduction #SustainableProcesses #IBDGroup

Please welcome Luca Heim! I am Luca, and I completed my Bachelor's degree in Bioengineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany). After an internship at Boehringer Ingelheim in Biberach (Germany), I decided to specialize in biopharmaceutical process development in my Master's program at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, during which I also completed a semester abroad at Loughborough University (UK). My Master's thesis focused on developing a capture process for the purification of virus-like particles. I am now starting at the IBD Group as a Prae Doc, where I will also work in the field of biopharmaceutical process development. In my free time, I enjoy playing tennis, running, and hiking in the mountains.

Paper alert! Our new paper highlights the importance of mechanistic process modeling for improved product-to biomass yield in fed-batch processing. We showcase the utilization of suboptimal, historical experimental runs for subsequent process optimization. Existing process designs rely on simple feed profile and basic statistical tools for data evaluation. The proposed framework OptFed manipulates temperature and feed rate profiles in order to maximize to product yield of the recombinant protein L by 19%. Thanks to all contributors and to Universität Wien for the fruitful collaboration! Also congratulations to the team of Jürgen Zanghellini! #ccoperation #modeling #OptFed #ProteinL #optimization https://lnkd.in/dvwmzkwv

Please welcome Anna Koch! "My name is Anna Koch, and I commenced my doctoral studies at the IBD group in September 2024. I obtained my Bachelor's degree in molecular biology from the University of Graz, followed by a Master's degree in microbial ecology from the University of Vienna. While working on my Master's thesis on halophiles, I developed a keen interest in extremophiles. I am eager to continue working with them during my PhD studies, focusing on strain development and optimization for generating value-added products."

Paper alert! In this study Viktor Sedlmayr et al. explored the physiological and metabolic response of Sulfolobus acidocaldarius to excessive nutrient concentrations. While overflow metabolism is a widely studied phenomenon in bacteria, yeast and mammalian cells, this effect has so far been largely unexplored for archaea. With the use of RNA-sequencing and computational methods, they could enhance the fundamental understanding of the metabolism of S. acidocaldarius, with consequences for future archaeal bioprocessing. Thanks to all contributors for this successful collaboration!
