On 25 February 2025, K1-MET took part in the hybrid workshop hosted by the HBI C-Flex project exploring four exiting projects: MaxH2DR, RecHycle, Safe H-DRI Project and HBI C-Flex. With over 70 participants joining both in person and online, all gained insights into the ongoing work, had valuable discussions and a great knowledge exchange. Following the workshop, the project consortium and supportive advisory board met for the 16th status meeting – which continued with further discussions in Belgium at CRM on the next day. The new project TGH2 (“ThermoGreenHydrogen – Sustainable energy conversion and storage for the JTP region”) demonstrates a sustainable concept for energy conversion, storage, and utilization. A research facility, consisting of a battery storage system and a PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) electrolyzer, will be installed. This setup will demonstrate how renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower can be used to produce hydrogen cost-effectively. Additionally, a thermoelectric energy recovery system will be developed to utilize unused industrial waste heat. Building on the experimental findings, a concept for the construction of a large-scale system will be developed using simulation tools. This system will optimize energy use, balance fluctuations, maximize electrolyzer operation, and enhance industrial energy efficiency, contributing to a sustainable energy supply for the JTP region. From 10 to 12 February K1-MET took part in the project meeting of the H2PlasmaRed Horizon Europe project in Leoben, Styria. The main objective of H2PlasmaRed is to develop a green CO2-free steelmaking route based on H2-plasma technology while promoting a circular economy by valorizing industrial sidestreams to meet the targets of the European Green Deal for reducing CO2 emissions in the steel industry across Europe. K1-MET GmbH took part in the 2nd workshop of the COMET Module FuLIBatteR at the BOKU University in Tulln/hybrid on 20 February 2025. Experts of the module and external stakeholders shared their research activities on sustainable Lithium Ion Battery (LIB) recycling to ensure an efficient and sustainable recovery of critical raw materials from spent LIBs. In addition, a visit of the laboratory made it possible to experience the experimental setup at first hand. The COMET Module is funded within COMET – Competence Centers for Excellent Technologies – by BMK, BMAW as well as the co-financing federal provinces Upper Austria and Styria. On 12 February 2025 the kick-off meeting of the project AI4Lab2Plant – Artificial Intelligence driven Knowledge Transfer from Lab to Industrial Plant took place at the software park in Hagenberg (Upper Austria). The project is funded by AI-Region Upper Austria and aims at transferring knowledge gained in laboratory experiments and classical modelling approaches to the full scale industrial application by using new machine learning algorithms. The new Austrian funded project NatMatSave30! had its kick-off meeting on 13 February 2025. Main goals of the project are: ▪︎ Material recycling of used plastics (glass fiber or carbon fibre reinforced) as a substitute reducing agent in the blast furnace with the accompanying development of a suitable comminution method ▪︎ Replacement of natural mineral fillers with wet granulated blast furnace slag in all application fields ▪︎ Evaluation of the use of pelletized or regranulated secondary plastic materials in electric arc furnaces This project receives funding from Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology, represented by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG Österreichische Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft mbH project no. 922969 / FO999922969).
