MC4 Project

✈ 8000 #aircrafts will come to the end of their lives by 2030 and there is no existing solution to manage them except for store aging and landfilling. The goal now is to have recyclable and recycled materials for the aeronautic industry to overcome this issue. This sector requires materials that are light and high performance at the same time. To answer these specifications and needs, #composites have been widely used in the manufacturing of aircrafts in the past years. They are known to be much #lighter than metals alone while having in some cases better mechanical properties. ♻ In the MC4 project, FIDAMC - Fundación para la Investigación, Desarrollo y aplicación de los Materiales Compuestos and GAIKER Technology Centre are in charge of recycling the uncured carbon fibres pre-preg from the aeronautic sector. This would make Europe independent in terms of raw materials supply with the #recycled composites becoming the new virgin material. 🚀 On the 5th and 6th of November will take place the “Colloque National du #Recyclage #polymère” (National symposium for #polymer #recycling) at Clermont Ferrand in France. This event is the occasion to bring together key players from the polymer sector, at a time when polymer recycling represents a critical international challenge to be addressed in the coming years. It will also be a valuable occasion to present the results of the MC4 project, highlighting the progress made as well as the challenges encountered throughout the process. TECHTERA will be present for dissemination and communication purposes and the CEA will take part in a conference to present their new thermosetting #vitrimer epoxy resin, which is not only recyclable but also high-performing. ♻ This newly developed matrix is currently being used for the long-term recycling process of glass fibre reinforced composite in the MC4 project. ❓ Did you know that 98% of #carbon fibre and #glass fibre reinforced composites end up in landfills at the end of their lives and that 80% of these virgin fibres come from outside of Europe? TECHTERA was present at the #TexComp15 conference in Leuven from the 11th to 13th of September. This event gathered specialists of the #technicaltextiles and #composites sector for three days rich in research and knowledge sharing. The conference featured a keynote from philippe sanial, R&D Director at project partner CHOMARAT Group and President of Techtera, about the challenges and opportunities of #sustainability for textiles in composites. It was also an occasion to explain the MC4 project via a poster presentation which was a great dissemination opportunity as it allowed to touch a very technical public that was able to challenge the project and make some interesting suggestions. ♻ One of the circular pathways that is being explored in the MC4 Project is the #reuse and #recycling of uncured pre-preg #carbonfibres. During the layout process an important quantity of pre-preg isn’t cured and ends up as scrap that is later incinerated. In order to avoid the extra costs and the incineration of these high-quality samples, partner FIDAMC - Fundación para la Investigación, Desarrollo y aplicación de los Materiales Compuestos with the help of GAIKER Technology Centre have been exploring two different methods: ➡ The Recycling via scrap re-shaping ➡ The Recyling via the Bulk molding compound (#BMC) intermediate manufacturing These two methods show great results which give great perspective for the composite sector. However, new solutions to extend the shelf life of the material still need to be found, such as finding the temperature limitation to keep it stable at least 8 weeks or improving the formulation. 🚀 The demand for #advancedmaterials is growing but the problem of critical raw materials is increasing day after day. This first leads to a rethinking of the way we manufacture high performance products in Europe. Moreover, it explains why the development of new #efficient, #lightweight, and #sustainable advanced materials is at the heart of many projects these days. 📢 On June 6th, the MC4 project partners PROFACTOR, TECHTERA, Noma Resins sp.zo.o., Reparaciones Náuticas Amura , and i-RED Infrarot Systeme GmbH were present at the "Efficient, Lightweight, sustainable advanced materials - Supporting EU industries to meet the Green Deal targets » event at the European commission. ♻ #Recycling glass-fibre reinforced composites into new products is one of the key challenges of the MC4 project. VDL Fibertech Industries BV is in charge of using the mechanically recycled #glassfibre reinforced #composites into new parts. To showcase their work, they were present during the closing meeting of RAAK projects on reuse of composites in Utrecht, organised by Lectoraat Kunststoftechnologie and Albert ten Busschen on the 3rd of June. 🛥 Boatbuilding is one of the many applicative markets of composite materials. And as it is the case for other sectors, improving #sustainability and #circularity while maintaining a high level of quality and aesthetics is one of today's crucial challenges. 📢 Reparaciones Náuticas Amura was present during the #Navilia2024 exhibition. This event is an international shipbuilding exhibition that was held from the 21st to the 23rd of May at the IFEVI in Vigo’s Exhibitions Center. It was an opportunity to present the MC4 project to the public and companies in the maritime sector. 🚀 Transforming research results into successful industrial application proves to be a constant challenge. The topic of #industrial uptake was central during the #Indtech conference. This event took place in Namur from the 3rd to the 5th of June and was about industrial technologies and their current challenges. It gathered scientists from all around Europe around conferences, exhibitions and B2B meetings. 💡 Several topics were at the heart of this event like the European #competitiveness, #advancedmaterials? European #partnership or even open innovation test beds. In the exhibition area, European projects were presented and TECHTERA took the opportunity to present the MC4 project.
