You can't play piano keys that you can't reach. At MED-EL, we apply this principle to our hearing solutions. Recent synchrotron imaging studies show that the average length of the spiral ganglion extends sometimes even more than two turns. This is why we stress the importance of an electrode that covers beyond one and a half turns of the cochlea. Covering each patient’s natural tonotopic stimulation range can make use of the cochlea’s full potential as nature intended. What does hearing with a cochlear implant sound like? In a recent study, Dorman et al. compared results from 10 recipients fitted with a long electrode array (28 mm) to recipients fitted with a short electrode array (18.5 mm) from a previous study. These types of matching experiments are invaluable for diagnosing and resolving technical issues with CIs, developing new coding strategies, and simulating the sound of CIs for normal hearing listeners. Music can transcend languages, age groups, and cultures. Despite advances in cochlear implant (CI) technology, many myths persist about how a CI sounds, particularly in relation to music. We believe music perception should never be considered merely an added bonus for CI users. Advanced front-end processing with programs designed specifically for music enables audio processors to transmit a wide dynamic range with optimal compression. This preserves loudness cues sufficiently, enabling CI recipients to perceive the dynamic complexity of music without too much modulation depth distortion. To illustrate, the “speech banana” audiogram shows the frequency and volume range needed for speech perception. Additionally, it displays a larger bubble that represents the frequency and volume ranges required for music perception.
